[BUG] The Siege Operator has arrived
« on: March 28, 2011, 09:39:31 am »

Hi,

I've applied for a bugtracker account, but I didn't receive the e-mail, so I can't put the bug there. And, as the bug forum seems to be locked, I can only write it down here.

So, here's the deal : I'm playing 31.22, and while I've had perfectly normal liaisons until now, I've got a caravan from the mountainhomes and a... Siege Operator. Yup, you read that right. The game wrote me that "The Siege Operator <Urist McDorfName> from <My Civ name> has arrived."

And when I check the map, zooming on him, I see a red dorf, deemed a Siege Operator, which I can't give orders to, and who stands along the border of the map. While observing his thoughts and other info, I have what an enemy or whatever would give (the description), but no thoughts or whatever. He's definitely NOT one of my dwarves.

Any idea why the liaison got bugged ?

I *think* it is this:
1) Liason dies
2) Siege Operator becomes new Liason
3) UristMcSiegeoperatorMcLiason comes to your fortress

IIRC they act like normal Liasons so there is no real problem

I don't think this is it, I mean, I didn't have a siege operator to begin with (at least, I don't think I had), he would have had no business being on the extreme side of the map (the last tile, before the great nothingness), and also, he doesn't move, while a real liaison would be trying to reach the expedition leader...

Any other idea about what might cause it ?

I'll save the folder for review, if anyone needs it.

It's not YOUR seige operator - it's an existing worldgen dwarf from your civilization.

A guy who already happened to be a seige operator was designated to be a liason from the mountainhomes to your fort.  It's the mountainhome's siege operator they sent.

Still, this is the sort of thing that should be up on the bugtracker - you should send a PM to one of the guys who runs the bugtracker if you're having a problem. (I guess send a message to Dwarfu?)

Also, be sure to put up a save (if you have them, both a save from just before the seige operator arrived, and after he arrived) on DFFD under the bugged saves heading to let Toady get a look at what causes that bug.  You have a vastly greater chance of getting some action on the bug if you have saves of the bug in progress.

Obviously, I didn't know I would get the bug, so I don't have any save "just before". But I saved only a few moments after it arrived, so the messages showing its arrival and the dorf himself shouldn't be hard to find.

I don't know if it will help them solve the problem, but that's all I got anyways :)

I'll wait for the e-mail from the bugtracker, hoping it's not broken.

I keep seasonal saves just in case of bugs - just delete the ones you don't need once you've got the next season.

Had something similar in my game, not sure if it should be considered a bug though. In my case my leader was to busy to arrange a meeting with the liaison. The liaison thus spend the entire year running after him, and was still on the map when the next dwarven caravan arrived, I got an announcement that some Urist mcdwarf the planter (or another job, don't remember) arrived, now both are running around after my leader.

In this case, the liaison was still alive, and fulfilling his job, so the new dwarf should be complimented for not claiming the title of liaison for himself.

The same kind of ?fun? happened to me once. I got a message "Urist McCheesemaker has arrived" (he really was a cheesemaker). I couldn't assign any labours or anything to him, and his colour was brown. He stood close to the edge of the map for quite some time, then started slowly walking towards my fortress. I eventually lost track of him, I think the goblins got him. I don't remember if I got a liaison that year, they get boring after a while. It was either 31.16 or 31.18, and I don't have a save, I think.
