I build an enormous, legendary undercroft. The nobles get their tombs, of course.

If someone dies I randomly put a tomb somewhere.
A tomb is a 5x5 room with a door, a coffin is in the centre a 4 pillars are diagonal to the coffin. The pillars (rough stone) may later be replaced with a statue fitting to the person.

I make catacombs with coffins. Mined out areas, or just little carved niches in even the soil level are good enough for the average dwarf. Others get something a little more elaborate.

If I get any deaths, they tend to become plentiful soon enough, so I just dig a room somewhere deep, put loads of coffins in, and wait as they're filled.

Afterwards, I might fill the room with magma, but I never got to do that yet...

Huge, narrow catacombs for your everyday dwarves, large tombs for nobles and smaller tombs for soldiers with fancy names. Animals get the boot.

It all depends on my layout and situation. Pretty much anyone gets a coffin, but if I need to engrave a slab, I will. They are usually placed out of the way.

If you build a masterwork coffin in a main thoroughfare, will dorfs admire it even if it's been filled? Usually I just put all the coffins in one room with a piece of artifact furniture to make it awesome, but I might have to change that.

Coffins are cheap, so I pretty much always use them.

I did have one game going where I made a proper outdoor graveyard, with a statue above each grave, and a two tile dug out room with the coffin.  It was quite nice.

Mine is a multi z-level mausoleum with a niche for every body and a statue in front of it . Every inch will be engraved with images from the good to bad. On the bright side, due to my dumb military , its filling up rather nicely. (^_^)

Dig out a space and chuck a coffin in when I need it. Military dwarfs also get an engraved slab in my war memorial room.
