33b miner still takes long route
« on: November 20, 2007, 08:12:00 pm »

i still have a problem of my miners going the long way to aquire the same result if they just stood still

see this:
---------

#####
...@#

...@#
##.##

---------

# wall
. floor
@ designated mine

the miner will first go to the top @ and dig that out
---------

but will instead of striking the nearest one next will walk around and go for the lowest one

---------

and finish up his job normally

dwarves prefer to dig from left to right but not top to bottom?

second instance,

dig a channel all the way around your 3x3 fort
they will immediately go far nw and spread out untill to the se
making them dig some west then stop and go dig some north
going all the way across the map instead of just digging the next nearest designation

all fine and dandy that they prefer furthest northwest from start but not the way this works

1. Code tags make diagrams that rock your boxers.
2. ETC.
3. This is probably an issue with pathfinding.

I've noticed it too, don't know if it's intended or a bug.  But miners have a set preference for the direction the like to mine squares from.  I've had miners dig a long corridor from the bottom up and if the last square at the top happened to be accessible from the left or the top, the little guy will run over 200 paces to mine it from that position even if he/she was adjacent to that designated square!

This is due to mining directional preferences and has been documented repeatedly, both on the forums and in the wiki

West
East
North
South
