Games like RotK
« on: March 28, 2011, 02:36:04 am »

Anybody know any games like RotK?  Looking for something for my wife and I to play together.  We've been talking about Romance of the Three Kingdoms 8 lately.  We played that quite a bit, years ago.  She really likes turn-based strategy with an emphasis on building, managing, diplomacy, etc.  We're currently searching for any similar games, but not having much luck.  Anyone know of any?  Can anyone recommend any good fantasy genre turn-based strategy games in general?

We've played Battle for Wesnoth quite a bit.  Looking for something a little more polished and in-depth.  I can tell she wouldn't be interested in Dominions.

Anybody played Disciples III?

Disciples III has some pretty impressive graphics, but I think the general consensus is that Disciples II is a bit better. You could also try out Heroes of Might and Magic III, that's one of my personal all-time favorite games.

I played Disciples... 2 I think. TBH I found that game pathethic. It attempts to copy Heroes of Might and Magic, but dumbs it down to the point of utter boredom. It does have flashy graphics, for what it's worth.

Go for any of the other mentioned games instead.

You might also want to give a shot to Age of Wonders (or any of it's sequels, particularily SM), SMAC, the civilization saga, the Total War saga

I'd recommend Crusader Kings and Europa Universalis III if you and your wife don't mind playing on computers rather than consoles. These 2 fill a gaming "need" of mine that is very similar to that which RotK fills.

Gee, and here I thought Heroes of might and magic was already as boring as a game could get.

Much prefer PC, actually.

I don't know what game you're thinking of, but HoMM3 is awesome, haven't played the others because it's supposed to be the best next to 2, but I've played it recently and still holds up as a awesome TBS so it's not just nostalgia.

There's, uh... Sengoku Rance. There was an aborted attempt at an LP in th'let's play forum not terribly long ago. As a game qua game, it's... pretty good, actually. Definitely RoTK style. I'd recommend it if you and your wife can stand the, ahem, ancillary content. Don't remember if there's any multiplayer-type aspect to it, but hotseat play would definitely be possible.

I would suggest Rotk 9 - through the rest of the ones they made it is a good series, but if you already played those I would push for the HoMM series

I'm a fan of the Rotk series, but I enjoy the ones which you play as a force (as in 9 and 11) more than ones where you play from an officer's perspective (like 7, 8 and 10).  If you're going for one I'd recommend 11. Not only does it actually look a lot more appealing visually, but I find it's all around more pleasant to play than previous games. Plus actually finding a copy of 11 is a lot easier than finding any other PC version.

But, uh, similar games with a fantasy theme? Age of Wonders and Civilization with the Fall from Heaven mod come to mind, but I've haven't played Age of Wonders in a long time, and although I'm a fan of Civ I haven't ever tried Fall from Heaven...  So I don't think my opinion on either is worth much.

I can vouch heavily for Age of Wonders - Shadow Magic. After you've learned how to play it, there's a ton of mods which add balance and content which enhances gameplay massively. (Example - Dwiggs)  8/10

Heroes of Might and Magic 3 is also utterly, utterly awesome. There are some flaws - no founding of new cities, cities are always one archetype of fantasy creature and cannot be converted between them, high level warriors crap out compared to high level mages, etc. but in general, it is a shocking awesome game. 9/10

Civ 4 with Fall from Heaven is rather good as well, although it does feel they had to shoehorn some elements into the civ engine (random events, the way the barbarians work, etc.) Nonetheless, I feel it is a good game. 7/10

Haha, funny. I prefer the ones that have more RPG aspects because I like how you don't have to play as a ruler. It's fun to play as a general or a strategist. Less fun as a prefect, but you get more time to gallavant around the country doing quests and collecting cool items.

I liked that too. Sometimes it's fun to play the middle-man.
