Filling a lake?
« on: March 27, 2011, 10:19:17 pm »

By some great luck, I happened upon an area that is basically a depression beside a brook. It looks as though I may be able to fill this depression by channeling over to the brook. My idea is to have a towering fortress in the middle of a vast lake. Is this awesome? (Y/Y)

EDIT: Technically it's a pond, since it only takes up a 4x4 area, but still.

So really you'd have a 1 tile wide moat around a solid 2x2 spire of rock. It could certainly tower, but I think "fortress" implies actually being able to go inside the structure. I'm just saying.

To actually contribute, you could dig out your own depression and make it exactly the way you want it.

Or are you saying that it's 4x4 embark tiles (as in, about 200x200 in-game tiles)? If that's the case, it could be pretty neat. Digging out some cool waterworks before you flood it can only add to the excellence.

Yeah, sorry, I was talking about the embark area. I was thinking a lake in-game can take up a whole region. For reference:

The z-level below would be completely submerged when I channel into the brook.
I'm not very experienced with waterworks but I'll try some things.

"I drowned my whole fortress and everyone died" post: inevitable. :)

OMG! Make sure your fortifications there aren't at GROUND LEVEL!

Ha ha, no, they're 1 floor up.
Although I'm curious whether there might be some spill-over, since as far as I can see brooks tend to be like 8/7 water depth.

Yeah maybe the fortifications should be Z+1 over any possible water that might flow in.  Just to be safe and avoid said inevitable "everbodie ded from teh drownings" post ;)

Can you tell I've lost a few forts to stuff like this?

I'm uber careful, to the point that before opening a floodgate I could easilly spend 1-2 days realtime looking over the fort to make sure I have everything accounted for.  It works 70% of the time, too.

Wasn't keeping track of Z-levels earlier, punched a hole in my underground farm before the floodgate was in place.

New fortress.

Hah, I tried the exact same thing a few forts ago. The channel apparently lead into my throne room. Well, at least the king's last thought was him admiring the beautiful waterfall.
