Couple of questions
« on: March 27, 2011, 05:31:35 pm »

Hey all, another few questions from me :P
*It has been a few years and no caravan, I have a trade depot, am i forgetting anything?
*Can I reclaim wood for prebuilt objects (barrels, crutches, etc) (If not I haven't seen the caravan, is there a way to get wood if I don't have an axe
*When do the first few sieges appear?
Thanks, Kotor!
****
EDIT
Also, can I leave the small area my fortress is on and invade other places or am I stuck where I am.

*No idea. The first autumn caravan ALWAYS comes, so... no idea.

*Don't think so, and no. You're boned

*When you produce enough wealth, not sure how much. After a year or two, usually...

*Nope, you can not. How'd you move all your tunnels and such?

Are you on an island, glacier or other difficultly-accessible location ?

If you did not get ANY caravans, it is possible that you will not get goblin ambushes and sieges.

Press |c| to look at your civilizations. If the dwarf civilization you come from has no leaders, it means that civilization no longer exists.

Also, check and see if there is a 3-tile-wide path to your depot. Caravans don't bring wagons at present, but the game still checks to see if wagons can get to your depot before letting any caravans through.

Trade caravans will still appear even if there's no 3-tile-wide path from the map edge to your trade depot.  In fact, they'll still appear even if you don't have a trade depot.  If you aren't seeing any trade caravans, it probably means your civilization is dead, and/or you've placed your fortress in a location no civilizations can reach.

Thanks for the great answers, I don't have any wood, but lots of stone is there a way to make an axe?, thanks!
Also, another stupid question, is there a way to tame a bluejay then eat it, or a hedgehog, because I told my guy to tame and he isn't doing anything.

Bluejays and hedgehogs are vermin-type creatures, and can't be butchered.

1. Are there any surviving civilizations in reach? Check with the (c) key.
2. You can use the 3 wood from your wagon to make a carpenter's workshop and from that a training axe with the 3rd log, which can be used to cut trees.
3. At certain wealth/population levels, I don't remember offhand.

I think the only way is to systematically build all of your cages, attach the ones with vermin to levers, and then release them

Actually you can assign them to a pen/pasture and at some point that'll get rid of em. I haven't checked to see if it's when you switch pastures and turn off the first one and don't reassign them or if they leave some point before then.

Build a cage in a meeting area.  Assign the vermin to it.  Dwarves who like those vermin will get a happy thought whenever they walk by.

Thanks, couple more coming your guys way!
I built on an aquifer, is there anyway to go down or am I stuck above a 7/7 water?
If a guy rejected my trade, was it because I offered too many trinkets for crossbows and the such, he was making 300 profit. Thanks, Kotor

If they reject the trade it's probably because your trader lacks skillz. Elfs, as is well known, are hippies and won't buy tree-related items. Everyone else just wants a good profit margin and your trader needs to be able to haggle them down.
