I was thinking that since cobaltite is already in the game as a mineable stone, that it should be possible to derive cobalt from it. That's only part of the suggestion however, the main suggestion is that once it is implemented the game should be set up to make the metal be primarily used by kobalds and goblins (as that is, in fact, the origin of the metal's name), and furthermore that once the bugs in the poison system are worked out, using cobalt items should have a slight chance to cause skin irritation to any creature that is not a kobold or a goblin.

Step 1: Mod in cobalt.

Step 2: Make reaction to produce cobalt.

Step 3: Make said reaction availableto kobolds.

Boom. Kobolds with cobalt.

I'll probably do that, but I still can't make it cause contact dermititis to other creatures (even if I give it a contact syndrome that specifically ignores kobolds)

Mind you, the methods needed to extract cobalt are easily far more complicated than those needed to produce steel. I guess it would be thoretically possible for civilization at dwarven tech level to produce cobalt in pure metallic form, but I think it was mainly used for glazing and alchemy in pre-modern times (and in form of powder).

But that being said, here's the matweb entry for cobalt: http://www.matweb.com/search/DataSheet.aspx?MatGUID=4602449fc566494ab3efa286e8827c99

I tried to search for cobalt+nickel alloy but those were all very hard stuff alloyed with the likes of vanadium and chromium.

Nope. It wasn't used for anything at all, because pre-modern civilization had absolutely no means by which to purify it. In the latter part of this quote, you're actually referring to salts/oxides of cobalt, not the metal.

Yeah, that's right. I should have probably written oxide powder for clarity. I do think it would have been possible to burn off the the oxygen with charcoal in furnace though, but it's probably not something that kobolds should be capable. And I belive not something that was done before 19th century either.

What I meant is that they should have access to this metal but still lack access to all others. Sort of like they have some kind of mysterious blind spot in their otherwise all-encompassing ignorance.

Sure, but... how? If you know a method for extracting metallic cobalt from cobaltite, you almost certainly would know how to do plenty of other things, considering how godawfully complex doing that is in the first place.
