Didn't see a thread for this game (although after playing it, im not sure if it deserves one...).

Anyone else play this? It's a Russian game from now apparently defunct developer Deep Shadows. Recently an English version was released (which is, quite frankly, one of the worst translation jobs I've ever heard of - they simply stripped all the Russian dialog, which bugs the game to not play any audio at all most of the time, and made a really crappy effort at translating the text - luckily a fan made translation patch is better and doesn't screw up the audio). The funny thing is apparently the GamersGate version (which costs $30) is a cracked unpatched version, which you can't patch because that will remove the crack and thus you can't play your legitimately purchased game. To get the GamersGate version working with the patch you have to download a keygen, lol. I bought the russian version from yuplay.ru for $8 and downloaded the unofficial translation patch (which translated the text better, and still included the cutscenes from the english version). The translated cutscenes are laughable - every single character is voiced by the same guy, including the woman. The funny thing is the guy tries to change his voice on some of the chars, with a really creepy soft voice for the woman. But at least you can get the gist of whats going on in the cutscene, even if its difficult to figure out who is saying what sometimes.

It was a fun game, but it ended really unexpectedly - and I never did see some of the features the game was supposed to have. I'm not sure if I took the wrong path and missed a bunch of the content or what, but it was super short. Supposedly you can board ships in the game, but I never found a way to do that - all the space fighting I got to do in the main mission was shooting a few little fighters down and a couple freighters, which provided absolutely no challenge.

I'll describe my playthrough just to see if I can get anyone else's opinion who has played it to see if maybe I missed some of the content.

It feels like I was reading a book and halfway through when the story is actually starting to come together and the plot is actually getting interesting I find out the rest of the pages are blank.

I guess at $8 it wasn't so bad, I got about 8 hours of enjoyment out of it. But if I had purchased it from GamersGate for $30 I'd be pretty annoyed.

You're saying GamersGate are pirates selling cracked games for more than they actually cost to buy legally now? That's a bit odd.

Wasn't there some Ubisoft/EA game that had a mean copy protection that after a while the company used a pirate crack to distribute it with?

I know Ubisoft sold a shitton of Age of Mythology CD's, all of them using the exact same CD Key.

This game looks fun, though :D

Starforce was a nasty piece of work for a while, then SecuROM had some stuff that was basically spyware that it installed and took over your computer, in some cases it completely crashed it and trashed the computer, forcing you to completely re-install windows.

So what's this game about, anyways? Is it a space-sim or something like Freelancer, or something more like Mass Effect, except without the fate of the universe in the balance?

I'd compare it more to Boiling Point with physics and spaceships. Or think Stalker with vehicles and less interesting or realistic environments. Or just youtube a trailer, I guess.

Well, the gameplay is a bit of a mash up. It's an FPS with RPG elements. On planets you can go on foot or drive diff vehicles (first planet only has cars, second has none, third has cars or this dinosaur like creature, fourth has hover tanks, trikes, armored buggies, regular buggies, and walking mechs.) In space you fly your ship, although I didn't find the space combat to be that challenging or fun. There are experience points awarded in both, and you select perks as you level up that affects the game - like one to make your lasers charge faster in space or make you reload guns faster or run faster on planets. The interface in space leaves a bit to be desired - you can't target ships (or at least I couldn't find a way to, the perks section has a Chaser perk that speaks of targeting them, but even with it I couldn't figure out how).

I found the planet based fighting to be entertaining, although the way the enemies have endless grenades and endless uses of a directional force field that takes a bunch of bullets to break through (they themselves only take a few shots, same as you) is kind of annoying, and by the time I got to the fourth planet I just bought 1000 rounds for my heavy weapon (forgot the name, weird organic thing that fires "larva" in a rotating pattern that explode on contact with anything) that killed them instantly with or without the shield since I got tired of firing 20 rounds to get through their shield on every single one. I wound up only using the assault rifle for sniping heads from a ways off before they noticed me and put up the shields. The really annoying part is when you shoot and drop their shield and they immediately put it back up before you can kill them - you have to either peg em in the head or put a few rounds in their chest pronto as soon as the shield drops, or chances are it will come right back full strength and you'll have to fire the rest of your clip into it. And these are the regular mooks, not any kind of bosses - guys you encounter by the dozen on the last planet (which made the explosive gun that much better, since at one point it had like 10 guys standing together waiting to get you, and one well placed explosion took them all out without a protracted gunfight using five hundred rounds to take them all down one by one).

IMO the game could have done without the force field things, or at least give the player one so you can get on a perch and fire back at them when they're all shielded up instead of having to strafe and run around while shooting their shields or hoping they move and lose the shield long enough for you to tag them in the head.
