Ambassadors.

Maybe it has been suggested before? Perhaps it could fit in with the caravan arc.

If your civilization is at peace with another race, they could send an ambassador once your fortress is deemed worthy.

The ambassador would be a permanent, non-laboring citizen of the fortress. Much like nobles, they would require decent rooms but would not mandate anything. Once they are settled in, it would be possible to send your mayor discuss with them, and change the goods you require form their caravan ( provided the caravan is not coming soon) even after the liaison is gone. It would also be possible to send gifts to their monarch or discuss peace treaties should you end killing one too many caravans. The elf could warn you when you are about to reach your tree quota ( Not that anyone cares).

In their free time, the ambassadors would hang around the meeting hall, waste booze and food, or remain in their quarters. Human and dwarven ambassadors could also spend some free time sparring with your military.

It would also be cool if these ambassadors could share some of its race specialties, such as humans teaching your dwarves how to use exotic weapons, elves teaching you how to make wooden armor, and dwarven ambassador from other civs could teach you how to make tongas and skirts, or things that is not available from the start.

Of course, killing the ambassador wouldn't be very appreciated.

I posted a while back about having fort visitors, this seems similar, why not have a search for Visitor posted by me? :)

I think it's the way towns develop now. In the beginning, people move into a town. Then they start producing tables, which results in more and more tables. Soon tables represent a significant portion of the population, they start lobbying for new laws and regulations, putting people to greater and greater disadvantage...
Link for full quote. 'tis mighty funny.

This is a good idea. I'd like to be able to request goods from non-dwarven civilizations.

Hopefully we will have visitors with the caravan arc, maybe when we get taverns.

Iv seen people who haven't had a redheaded person in their family for quite a while, and then out of nowhere two out of three of their children have red hair.
What color was the mailman's hair?

How would they tell the caravan?

How would they tell the caravan?

Pigeons, bees, magic. Who knows.

How can the dwarves tell there is a +giant cave spider silk sock+ 100z underground? They just can.

I believe the ambassadors would want you to trade as much as possible. If you could just make those things yourself, why trade? Food and Booze are easily attained. Longswords are one of the only reasons why humans make it out of my gates breathing.

And a dwarf wearing a skirt. First off clothing bug. Second, same as above. Third, dwarves do not respect gender specific clothing, which means males will be wearing skirts to. Fourth, it's a dwarf in a skirt.

I used skirt as an example since some dwarven civilizations will sometimes have some pieces of clothing disabled. Dunno if it can happen to skirts though.

As for ambassadors teaching race secrets, I know it doesn't make much sense economically. I just wanted to make them seem more friendly and useful. I gues they're all going to end up in magma anyway.

I like the idea. But we'd have to wait till all nobles that come to your fortress are fixed since we're still waiting for the Dungeon Master, Hammerer...etc.
