The most frustrating thing about sieges...
« on: March 27, 2011, 09:09:38 am »

Is when they arrive a day before the caravan was supposed to come!

The in-game justification, my understanding is, that they arrive near the caravan in order to threaten it/destroy it/rob it, but when they arrive the day before, they prevent it arriving at all!

Arriving the day after, whatever, as long as you have a protected entrance to your fortress you can deal with them and the caravan will be safe.

But the day before, you don't even get a chance to, because the Caravan never even arrives.

It'd be nice if it'd arrive a few days late or something.

Anyways, I'm playing Fortress Defense mod, so I'm getting at least one siege a season, usually 2-3. Otherwise this is admittedly a fairly minor issue, maybe occuring once every few years at most.

That's only a problem because you don't kill them fast enough.

Does it really matter if you kill the merchants yourself or if the gobbo's do it?

Sometimes they arrive so close to the Caravan time you can't kill them fast enough. Not unless you have the entire border of your map lined with magma cannons.

Why would you not want to do this?

Or a map-edge cave-in trap.

I've actually done that: http://mkv25.net/dfma/map-10096-flamegate

You want to remove sieges ? Wall off your map.

Or make a mega drawbridge trap all allong the map's edges, so you can squish any gobbo ambush that appears in your map.

I don't want to remove them, else I wouldn't have installed Fortress Defense. I mostly just wished they'd be a bit more polite when choosing their arrival time :-).

I've currently only fought enemies as hard as Furies and Tigermen. I'm a bit afraid of the next stage up, as a siege of fifty or so Tigermen proved a pretty significant challenge. Admittedly, only 5 dwarves died, but 3 of them were legendary warriors, normally largely untouchable.

This. And it works too!

If there is only a single place on the entire map that can be entered, everything will enter there. All caravans, diplomats, megabeasts, and sieges will enter from there.

This means you can park your entire military at that spot.

Or you can cover that path with drawbridges.

I've never had a siege that ended before.

You kill them all, then the siege ends.

Then I had a siege that lasted well over 7 years.

I think I killed about 300+ goblins in my most recent fortress. It's honestly kind of stupid how long sieges last if this is the norm.
