An odd idea - Going into a DF Coma
« on: March 27, 2011, 08:57:03 am »

Well, this is an odd idea.

I have thought about going into what I would call a Dwarf Fortress coma.

What this means is that I will not visit the site for anwhere from a month to a year.
The upshot of this is that when I come back, there will most likely be a major update, and I will be extremely happy with the progress, rather than checking every day, hoping that something new and exciting will happen.

The only problem is, I'm not sure I am capable of this.
Not playing DF for several months? That's like asking me to cut off my own arm. (Okay, maybe that was hyperbole)

Anyway, I'm not sure if it's the greatest idea I've ever come up with, or the worst.

Give me your thoughts on this.

An actual coma may help.

You should keep playing it, just don't visit the site :P
But looking at the rate Toady is updating the gmae nowadays you could also just wait a week and we are 3 updates further :P

You don't have to not visit this site for that. I just noticed yesterday that the game isn't 31.21 anymore.

No wait, it was this morning. Three updates, woot!

I did this while waiting for military/hospital fixes, and was (mostly) well-rewarded.

Surviving for a month without Bay12? You might go into an actual coma.

A coma after a DF coma? By the time you came out, DF would be so far advanced that your real life family members would be trying to clean themselves, but they would be too insane to do so!

This is what I already do. Until last week, I hadn't played DF since before the 31 series began.

In order to improve the universe's frame rate, we must all throw rocks into volcanoes and then do absolutely nothing, worldwide, for a week, to take pressure off pathfinding.
or maybe throw them into the large hadron collider to atom-smash them instead.
Not to mention to throw all available animals into tiny pits.

If you wait for a year, there will probably be a whole lot done.  It's probably a good idea if you can manage it, but it seems like the easiest way would be to find something unrelated to DF to get really into for a long time.

I'm not sure I could do it personally, I have too much fun reading the various threads on these forums.  I don't just come here for the updates though I use the main page as my bookmark, so I can read any devlog posts before I come here.

Ive done this to other games in the past. Sometimes they die off all together, sometimes they get a lot of updates... sometimes i find out you have to pay for the game now.

Either way, the only way to do this is simply forgetting the game exists, that way by the time you remember it should be a year or more later, and you can bathe in the amount of updates that has occurred.

I was thinking more along the lines of this legendary champion, all clad in dented and dinged up steel plate, his blood-drenched axe slung over his back, a notch in the handle for every enemy that saw the swing of that blade as the last sight they ever saw, a battered shield strapped over his arm... and a fluffy, pink stuffed hippo hidden discretely in his breastplate.

I've tried, multiple times, to stop playing DF, and it's been two days less than a year since I first downloaded the game.  It doesn't seem to work very well.  Also resolved to leave the forums two and a half times.

That didn't happen.

Hey, I did something like that between 31.08 and 31.19.
It's not so hard, just find something else to occupy your time.

The easiest way to wean yourself off of DF is to just bring in other things to fill the needs you satisfy with DF right now.  If you want to get off the forums, get caught up in a different social outlet.  If you want to get off the game, play a different game.

Shogun 2: Total War came out very recently, and I'm unsure of whether or not to get into it, since I never finished an Empire campaign since I was playing so much DF... but if I started seriously playing Empire to finish a campaign or played Shogun, I'd definitely stop playing DF to focus on the game I was playing.

Heres a tip, play WoW. Months of your life will suddenly dissapear without you even knowing they passed by.
