Playing DF on a laptop?
« on: March 26, 2011, 11:11:03 pm »

I just got a new laptop and put DF on it so that I could have my dorfs on the go. When I tried playing, I couldn't get past the embark screen because I don't have a numpad with the + and - on it for purchasing skills and such. What do?

I play on an older laptop, it has a "fn" key that is similar to alt (and in fact is between the alt and ctrl keys) that changes some keys on he qwerty keyboard to a numerical keypad.

Are you sure you don't have the mini-numpad on the main keyboard, accessible from some function-key combination? Mine is printed across the 7-8-9, u-i-o, j-k-l part, and I use a special key down between control and alt to access them.

Or just rebind.

I remapped the secondary scroll keys to [ ] - = when I played on a netbook. Now I can't play any other way.

I mapped my secondary scroll keys to [, ], , , and .. This kinda messes up one of the military menus though.

Alright, thanks. Also, this key remapping business is done outside of df, right? There doesn't seem to be any key configuration option in there.

Esc - "Key Bindings"

Or /data/init/interface.txt.

This is what I do, too. I'd consider making this part of the default DF configuration; especially if the practical death of the desktop form factor is as imminent as "they" say.

What is hydrogen? It's a substance which, if you leave enough of it sitting around long enough, completely unsupervised, becomes life that eventually evolves into something complicated enough to ask the question 'What is hydrogen?'

I bind + - to
")" and "-" on a macbook (recent macbooks don't have the fn keypad anymore).

Huh. I've got a Samsung and I don't have this problem. Plus and Minus work, in fact, all the keys work.

I remapped the secondary scrolls to F1-F4 ages ago. The irony is that my current laptop has a numpad but I wouldn't know how to use the 'real' keybindings if my life depended on it after years of F1-F4.

I remapped to CTRL+UP / CTRL+DOWN which works pretty well.
