If I'm not sure I just go by the avatar. I mean gotta make a guess somehow, so the avatar is a good start. I'm also guessing fqllve is a girl?

I can call you all sorts of insults without meaning to offend you. That does not mean they should not offend you.

Maybe this is just a cultural thing, but if you insult somebody without meaning to offend them, that is often viewed as a sign of friendship over here. I don't know how it works where you are, but if Adam and Eve are bowling, and Adam get a strike, while Eve is having an off day, then Eve may shout out 'You suck at bowling!', despite the fact that Adam clearly does not, and they would both laugh at the joke.

Hah hah nope!

Edit: You can check most peoples profile.

Huh? Even more blatant insults? That is a very interesting cultural thing.

This is extremely context-sensitive. Playful insults like that only work when there's an air of understanding between the people involved; when there isn't, they don't function and are just plain insults.

Yes, I suppose G-Flex has a point, can you do that to people you don't even know?

If I have to keep on repeating this, I'm going to go to the trouble of training a parrot to say it.

Thus why you should be careful about use of the word!

But it isn't just an instant hate speech.

But... You admit it is insulting?

You can always check their forum profile, you know.

Not that I care. I've been mistaken for a woman in real life. Over the internet is nothing.

I'm gay, you can say anything you want is gay if you don't mean it insulting, I like the word fag better anyway. *shrugs*

Honestly, Language is all about contexts.

But... You admit it is insulting?

If Adam goes up to Eve and says 'Hey, I just got hit in the head by a falling papaya fruit, and it really hurt! Guess I can't help you to move your piano up a flight of stairs today!' and Eve replies 'Well that's gay!', Eve isn't trying to refer to homosexual people in any way, she is just showing displeasure. The word 'gay' in this context isn't really 'charged with ill will towards homosexuals', but despite this, their homosexual neighbour Matthew might still be offended from overhearing this statement, so in the name of diplomacy, it might be best if Eve holds her tongue.

But there are cases where a word that is hurtful to a certain group is used outside that group even if it shouldn't be. Using "gay" as an insult, even if no gay people are around, is still pretty crass.

Oh yes, it can be used to slander homosexuals, no doubt, but that doesn't not mean to imply that just the use of the word in a negative way
constitutes hate speech

On a somewhat related note, the Colbert Report just delivered this PSA:

Quote from: Stephen Colbert
Kids, do not use the R word(retard), it is totally gay.

I think that is a relevant comparison and fits in at this point. Thoughts?
