What about the use of the word "gay" to say something is bad? What's your opinion?

People use it by impulse, I have had friends who have said it in my presence, but they are sorry about it. If it is a social norm, then I can understand, and when they say sorry I dont mind. Saying it and not apologizing (dont consider me) Im a little miffed, but when they use it in a spiteful way... Well, im angry/sad.

If I don't say anything, how am I supposed to figure out what your point is?

Man, I just googled "binary sexual orientation" and it was clear enough to me.

I think by now the word 'gay' has a double meaning, like 'rock', could be music, could be a stone, it depends on the context. On one hand, gay is a short word used to denote homosexuals, on the other it is a term used to describe something being undesirable. The fact that the two might have had something in common in the past when people were less tolerant to gays seems irrelevant to me, as I draw no connection. After all, we don't think of bundles of matches to be derogatory, do we? Having said that, I am not gay, and so how would I really know what is and it not appropriate? I don't know how it feels when something goes wrong and that is compared to your sexuality in a negative way. So I try to cut down on that one, just to be sure.

Pisses me right off.  Same as the use of "effeminate" as a pejorative.

It's too recent for it to have simply faded into the language, and we've got other words that work just as well without the other implications.

People don't like effeminate? I can honestly say that I do not recall that expression ever being used in belittlement... Unless we are also including related terms, such as 'He cries like a girl', but something like 'He dresses effeminately' isn't something I have ever heard.

It isn't some far-off, esoteric connection that only people interested in linguistics or etymology are aware of. Everyone is aware of it, and it's very much a neologism. You cannot pretend that people are not conscious of the very obvious connection between "gay (homosexual)" and "gay (pejorative)".

In Danish we have the word Bøsse, used to be the ugliest word for gays there was, today it's the common term. Gays in Denmark merely took it to them, rendering the word obsolete. I used to care when people said "Bøsserøv" og "Fag", now I call myself a fag, and put no stock in the word, thus rendering it uncabable of hurting me. I only feel bad if someone really close to me use it negatively.

...You seriously call gays "guns" down there? And "gun ass"? I realise logic don't apply very well to insults and the like, but without emotional attachments that just sounds silly. Bössa is a kids word, for god's sake!  :P

Can't remember how it started, but no one hears "gun" unless it's a historian speaking or he's holding a gun in his hands. Everyone hears gay, without a second of doubt it could be gun. Gun is either pistol, riffel or gevær. Bøsse means gay in Danish. Silly swedes, guess you're having a calm moment? (Rolig = calm, not fun. Speak proper Scandinavian! :b)

Now here's my opinion:

The meanings of words change over time. You kinda have to except that sooner or later.

The whole point is that it hasn't changed.  It's exactly the same word with exactly the same meaning used in a negative manner.
