Make underground flora only grow on mud
« on: March 26, 2011, 07:04:13 pm »

I prefer to build my low-value rooms like stockpiles, barracks, workshops, etc. in soil since there's no cleanup involved; thus, I absolutely hate it when I dig into a cavern and my nice neat grid spread through five layers of soil, sand and clay immediately starts to clog up with patches of floor moss and tower-cap/fungiwood saplings. In the caverns, fungus only seems to grow on mud; it makes no sense that huge forests should start to grow in dry soil or sterile sand. Anyone else with me on this one?

The fungus doesn't really interfere with anything. I like having it. I think it looks better, and the mid-game would actually be much harder (too much for my liking) without it (at least if you want to have grazing animals).

This is part of the general problems with plantlife and farming in the game, so yes, I think it is something that deserves attention.

It's a bit wonky and annoying, but easy enough to dodge if you need too. All you have to do is pave over the floors in the soil layers. It'll eat up loads of stone from your digging projects in the rock, as well as gives all those idlers some busy work to do instead of becoming buddy-buddy with each other to the point where they throw terminal hissy fits when something remotely fun happens.

Plants should grow in two kinds of areas: Muddy tiles (anywhere there is mud) and Dirt floors (for aboveground crops, if there is light).

Nothing should grow on rock except maybe a special kind of "moss" or "lichen" grass.

Possibly this could be controlled in the Raws through a few new tokens.

[GROWS_MUD] - This is the default, and would make plants require a muddy tile to grow on.
[GROWS_SOIL] - This is for aboveground plants.  Will not grow unless there is an honest-to-goodness soil layer beneath it.
[GROWS_ROCK] - Lichens and the like.  Basically anything without true roots that could easilly grow on a smooth rock surface.

I like fortresses because they are still underground.

I don't think anything does grow directly on rock (at least not as of 31.21)

Additionally, its probably also worth mentioning that fungi REALLY DO reproduce by spores, so it makes sense that their capacity to reproduce and spread would be even greater than the other flora and fauna in the game...
