The flying limbs inspire fear, and letting a single goblin leave the map to tell of the horror of the battle is worth it.

Your dwarves do get more XP if you prolong the combat, but you risk that your dwarves get injured.

You can't tell them you want to "Axe Them A Question" with a hammer

Spears.
... I mean, I'm torn between the sweet blunt torture of silver hammers, and the bloody effectiveness of blades made of a reasonably good material.

I don't mean to alarm you, but it appears that your Dwarves are all in fact elephants.

I like hammers because !!SCIENCE!! told me so. In a 10v10 of arena of steel armored dwarves, silver hammers beat steel battle axes. (I did the test myself to confirm the wiki)

Also, with hammers you can make them out of common, junky silver, while to be good axes need rare and precious iron, steel, or addy.

"Hello, I'd like to 'Hammer' you a question."

You're right, it doesn't have quite the same ring to it.

I saw that on the wiki, but the thing is that your fort doesn't normally get attacked by hordes of steel-clad dwarves. Instead you get attacked by goblins wearing copper and leather, and a few megabeasts which usually die way too easily.

Swords are the least dwarfy weapon. Even daggers can at least make someone look like a psycho (and we know how crazy those dwarves are). Also, swords are completely outclassed by picks.

And picks are completely outclassed by whips. But, real dwarves don't use anything but their bare fists.

Not true. Picks are actually better than whips against most things that aren't wearing heavy armour.

"Hey there (goblin|elf), I'm more than happy to spare spear you." has a pretty good ring to it as well. :D
