Add in plants you can harvest/farm which can be processed into cigars and suchlike.

Dwarves that like to smoke will do so if the proper tools/supplies are available.  Upside, Dwarves gain a powerful happy thought, downside, if Dwarves have addictive personality they begin taking time off from work to smoke.  Dwarves without an addictive personality will ONLY smoke on break, or at parties.

And no, I don't think we need addiction in here, though its possible since we have the raw code for alcohol dependency already.  No, early cigars didn't have all that nicotene and chemicals they put into cigarettes now.  It doesn't even have to be a cigar; could simply smoke leaf out of a bowl, a pipe, or whatever.

On that note, who can come up with names for Dwarven weed/tobacco?

Discussed in detail fairly recently.

It was concluded that smoking a tobacco like product would be widely accepted save for a few people, but smoking a weed like product was unpopular and only two or three people supported the idea.

Let me put it this way:

I smoke weed.  But I don't want weed in DF.  My dwarves idle too much already, as it is.

Dried and ground mushrooms with mild psychoactive properties (stimulant ala coffee, not hallucinogen) would fit dwarves vetter than leaf based products.

Bitter stalks are grown underground, dried at farmer's workshop and milled into iron powder, which is smoked with wood/stone/bone pipes. Gives some happiness, and possibly small speed boost for dwarves.

The objective should be to encourage the poster to participate in an existing thread, not to discourage any posting at all. 

(It's actually fairly odd to see so many people come out at once saying the same thing...)

Besides the actual smoking, tobacco might make a nice export good as the world economy gets implemented.

Personally I'd be for both of 'em being in-game, though I think dwarven culture would lend itself much more to tobacco than weed (dwarves are way too uptight to be weed-smokers - heck, for that matter, even DF *elves* are too uptight for it).

But for those who are prone to getting their undergarments in a knot over the matter, well... weed was in Gothic and it didn't equate to the end of the world, and voila, the first two Gothic games (and the third to a lesser degree) were still gritty and awesome.

I agree with the sentiment that if these exist in-game they should be heavilly obfuscated, meaning that we would not have dwarves smoking a pipe full of tobacco, rather, bitterroot or smokycap or something.

I believe there was already a semi-official "Longland Grass" stand-in for weed, at least in one roleplaying circle I saw.

Longland grass is just wheat with a different name - you mill it into flour, or brew it into beer.  They were just joking.

I made a long post with my opinion on the matter in the other thread but I always imagine elves smoking 'Rope Reed Bud' (rope reed being extremely similar to hemp) but I have a hard time imagining dwarves partaking in anything but alcohol and the occasional tobacco.  However I am also somewhat opposed to my own Idea because i don't want Toady to waste time implementing small cosmetic changes that won't really effect my dwarves (I am still good with tobacco however.)
