Turning off my electronics will not turn off the powerplants that supply them. Power plants are built to supply a large amount of power at all times and problems only occur when demand exceeds capacity. When demand is especially low, it burns along without noticing.

Er, I don't think this is true. I don't know the full details as I stay away from power electronics, but I think the generators do slow down or at least partially store the power somewhere else where they can use it later. There's a lot of money involved in that, they're not going to keep everything running on full steam 24/7.

The irony is that off-peak times are at night. I know it's an incredibly difficult concept for certain people to grasp (wat, lights arent consuming 80% of electicity), but that's how it is.

Youtube just put up a "lightswitch" on every page to change the theme to darkness. I hope they make that a permanent option, the white background starts to hurt my eyes after a while.

Download Stylish for FF, Opera, or Chrom*.
Grab one of these.
Notice which one is the most popular?
Just as dark as the lightswitch.

Well I've got nothing better to do for an hour now than burn garbage in my back yard. I bet I could dispose of my used motor oil while I'm at it.

note to all, all lcd monitors waste power when shooting black, when its white the crystals are "resting" so its not burning much energy.

So millions of YouTubers are going to waste power while celebrating Earth Hour? That's almost as good as the huge amounts of bottled water and paper flyers at enviromental rallys.

The self-defeating nature of it is just exquisite, no?

I want to swirl it around in a glass and warm it over a candle to bring out the full bouquet of irony.

It's still a damned fine color scheme change, energy use nonwithstanding.

wow, I just noticed youtubes light-bulb-earth thing by the name. Because visiting youtube is saving me energy right now. =D

side note: I'm pretty sure computers suck up next to nearly no power at all. Most energy is used by appliances, fridge, the AC, dishwasher, things many people are going to keep using during earth hour and not even think about it.

convenience > efficiency
