At War With the tree loving scum
« on: March 25, 2011, 04:10:31 am »

Chosen a dwarf civ that is at war with the elves ... Thought it would be fun until their war rhinos!!!! pop out . My fort is on a plateau with one way up (blocked it off) . Latest casualty count is 5 dwarves , 10 wardogs. Its a fort into its 2nd year , no steel , no metal . Is it possible to flood the map without walling off the map edges?

Your solution is marksdwarves, that you will have put into a danger room first and armed with a shield.

war rhinos would provide a tremendous supply of food and bones - extremely valuable food and bones.

I think it would be the best to make them jump of high cliffs when trying to dodge rains of bolts and tens of spikes popping from ground.

Bolts and spikes can be even be wooden if it matters

All ambushes eventually give up, yes.

I suppose people will have to start taking elves seriously, now that they show up on rhinos...

Dfprospect and see if you have weapons grade material.

You see, here's how I think this works:

I personally love being at war with the elves.  Make anyone who wants to enter your fort have to cross over a 5-tile long (or 7-9 tiles) path that is only 1-tile wide and if they dodge, they fall into some sort of pit (1Z is enough) that forces them to backtrack to the outer edge.

You can also setup a bunch of these that look like:

Code: [Select]
XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
..........T.............
..........T.............
..........T.............
..........T.............
..........T.....S.......
XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

. = channeled out 1Z deep pit with up-ramps removed
S = stairs down / out of the pit
T = narrow walkway (or constructed floor), covered in cheap blunt weapon traps
X = surface

The concept here is that your allies can run across the 5-tile long bridge, heading north towards safety, while the enemy keeps getting knocked off into the pit and has to go south to the stairs to get back up top.  If you want, these trenches can be as narrow as 3-4 tiles wide, with trap-filled walkways every 10-20 tiles apart.

This isn't an anti-elf weapon, that's just a weapon.  A nice one, but it makes no difference who it is.

I have another idea. Re-route your entrance using digging and walls through somewhere about 20 tiles long without anything 3 z-levels below. Dig down channels in those 3 z-levels from above, and block the stairs you use to come back with floors so there's no way to get into your fortress from the bottom side of it. Link a lever to all the bridges in that channel without ramps. Use a burrow to set at least one of your dwarves (or all, for more safety and quickness) within 3 squares of the lever.

Now to the fun part: Open the main entrance, and let all the dwarves eventually run towards your now accessible fort. When a few elves are almost over  your bridge, pull the lever. Voilą! You got a few elves with crippled legs on the bottom part of your pit! Rinse and repeat until pit is filled, siege is lifted, or sadistic instinct is satisfied. Also remember the rougly 10 unit steps delay between lever activation and bridge retraction. And for more safety, you can make the bridge-line much longer.

Then, once the next siege or ambush comes, do the same. You'll have wonderful gladiator fights on your pit. As a matter of fact I had a fight between THREE different goblin groups in that pit, as they spawned very quickly one after another, and were seemingly enemies of each other. The winner against all them with crippled legs? The caravan escorts that fell with them into my pit.

Yeah, an anti-elf weapon would be made of wood.

Elves should have to make san checks every time they get attacked by a wooden weapon.

Make the dodge-pit 20 z-levels deep with the bottom a big refuse stockpile. Eliminates extra hauling jobs and breaks victims up into lots of tiny pieces for more bones.

... oh, noes ... i'm being attacked by the elven riot police.  ???

One of my newly assigned miners was out getting a drink (before getting his new iron pick, unfortunately) when an elven ambush attacked (spring of the second year at my new fort).  One of the hippie swordsman ran up and began pummeling the jeweler with his ... rubber wood long sword.  Pig tail fiber cloth for armor is quite effective in this case, though the Very Unhappy dwarf is covered literally head-to-toe in bruises right now.

Iron speardwarves to the rescue!

(I'm playing a defeated civ that is still at war with a neighboring elven civ ... I guess this is their "caravan" for the year ... ::))

[edit]  And the 15 elven swordsmen were able to side track my 9 dwarf military long enough to kill the jeweler (who was tasked with mining) just before breaking and running.  They also killed one recruit (whose description stated she was very clumsy), and a lyemaker (i.e., a hauler).  Of course, my single squad of dwarves, half of whom didn't even show up to the fight, killed 10 of the hippies because they were equipped with iron spears, iron shields, iron helms and iron mail (though only about half had more than the spear due to ... production delays).

Me, I'd dig down to the second cave level, and harvest some 'shrooms.

As I almost always embark on a volcano, elves (or anything else my military can't hack into little pieces) are rarely a problem for more time than it takes for the magma to reach the river. Also, consider making a long winding entrance filled with weapons traps. But instead of digging tunnels, make it a giant tree farm, lay down floor along the path you want, then let it grow up and place the traps. Even better if you find a way to light it on fire while the elves are trying to get through it, while locking the door behind them.
