Farm plots never dry out
« on: October 30, 2007, 03:45:00 pm »

Even when winter has come and gone, I can just keep the same farm plot going year after year, even through winter. Surely this isn't intentional? We've got all these fancy new ways to manipulate flows and they're not even necessary when you can just empty a murky pool once and use that mud for the rest of the game? I was so proud of myself when I got a working irrigation system going in the new version, and then it was all for naught.  :(

You can just farm on soil now.  It'll be a bit more difficult later if you actually have to worry about the quality of the soil and a bit of irrigation.

It may have gone from a bit too difficult to a bit too easy, but I think there should be natural irrigation in places. You shouldn't always need to build complicated systems to do farming...

I did a complicated irrigation and drainage system for my underground farm and only needed to use it once..

Oddly enough I had half my farm dry up and need re-watering about 2 years in.

if you don't have a plot built on the area, the mud will go away eventually.

of course, by the time that happens, your farmers will have tracked mud from the plot over the entire fortress.

Farm like a pro:
Rewall a 1 tile room(8 wall pieces) in the entrace of the fort.
Fill it with water. Deconstruct and undesignate.
Wait a while.
Put a farm in every open space of your fort.

Result: Food always in grabbing range and no additional room required.
