I was recently thinking about top hats, (another item that should be added to Dwarf Fortress :P) and my mind wandered onto the topic of monocles. I thought for quite a while about how I could suggest something legitimate enough to try and sneak monocles and top hats into the game, and this is what I thought of.

As far as I know, there are three states of vision; Perfect, Impaired, and None. Why not expand on this feature of the game (as I'm fairly certain "Impaired" would mean one eye is completely missing...) and add other levels of sight that could effect things like sight does now, but also in different ways/amounts.

Now I'm not sure how to expand on sight mechanics, but if we do, glasses and monocles should be added as well. These items, depending on quality, will increase sight to its default position before any injuries, or if it is poor in quality merely some of the way there. They could all be created with cut gems or glass, with stone or metal frames. Monocles could be eye specific, so if one eye is causing the troubles, and is placed on the other, it will have no effect. Glasses could also prevent sickness from cave adaptation.

I think we can all agree though, that if monocles are added, so should top hats. Eh? Eh?

If top hats are in the game then sure, monacles should be there too.

But if either one of them is put into the game, the actual feel of the game shifts to steampunk.  While I like Steampunk, and dwarves SHOULD use steam technology, the FEEL of steampunk is not what Toady is going for... nor should he.  It's cliche.  And all that top hats will give you is that feel.  Same with monacles.

So I'd say no.

Your against dwarven top hats!? BLASPHEMY! But I'd give on the grounds that they make the game feel different than it should, or Toady not wanting top hats in the first place. (After all, its his game!)

Tophats doesn't imply steampunk.  It implies pointless sophistication and hilarious regality.  It implies the ability to look down one's nose at one's superiors and idly comment to kindly not bleed on the well engraved floor as they drag themselves by one arm, their only remaining limb, towards the hospital.

That being said, I'm going to mod in top hat, monocle, tuxedo, suede shoes, and riding gloves are pieces of armor.  Steel penny loafers, anyone?

Monocles would be quite nice, they are in period too. Maybe certain nobles like the bookkeeper would need a monocle/spectacles to achieve a certain degree of accuracy.

I love how people talk about Time Periods like the year 1050, The Age of Legends means anything whatsoever outside of DF context.

Honestly DF is NOT a medieval setting.  It's not a Victorian setting...

It's a Dwarven Setting.

And currently we have things in this setting like caps and plate mail and swords and crossbows, which implies a medieval-like era... but we also have water wheels, axles, and mechanical levers, which implies a much more advanced time than that...

And we even have some things in-game that weren't invented or used until the 20th century in reality, like Royal Jelly.

The concept is so fluid that really all we can say about this situation is "Toady said he didn't want Steampunk" and top hats, monacles, and the like definitely imply a shift towards a distinctly more Victorian, and therefore derivatively Steampunk, setting.

That being said, modding clothes is quite a simple operation, and I fully expect someone to come along and gift us with foppish clothings with which to clad our dwarves.  But the monacle improving stats in any way will have to wait till "magic" is possible in the way Toady has mentioned before in DF Talk... but that's a long way off.

Well said. But I have to ask, why should monocles be strictly magical when it comes to the bonuses they apply? You said it yourself, its a Dwarven Setting, and dwarves are ridiculously crafty. I'm sure they could get the glass at just the right angle and depth, that it could magnify/clear vision.

Then again, I don't know how glasses work, in that department at least. :P

Water wheels and axles were perfectly medieval. One of the reasons Europe climbed out of the dark ages was this miniature industrial revolution from water and wind power.

And that's exactly what Toady talked about when he mentioned "Dwarven Magic".  As in, no fireballs, no lightning bolts, no magic missiles... just good solid Craftsdwarfship, plus maybe a blessing from the Gods.  Basically, Dwarves will never have "proper magic", but rather they will only have "artifacts".  We have the artifacts already, but for now they're just pretty, very expensive, very dangerous goblin/kobold bait.  But sooner or later they'll have special powers.

And that's what will allow people to mod in glasses.  As it is, I don't believe items can affect stats or skills other than armor values... and even then it's actually seemingly handled by adding an extra "tissue layer" of metal/leather/chain onto the skin of the wearer's body... not AC or HP or anything like that.

Okay maybe water wheels and axles, but what you're talking about is the Rennaisance, which as I stated, implies a "later era" than the weaponry does.

Also, it was mainly all the people dying from Bubonic Plague that increased the standard  of living so much.  Less people means more resources, more resources means higher quality of life... hence the Rennaisance.

I know very little about coding, but if a Crutch can replace a body part that no longer functions due to injury currently, shouldn't a monocle be able to do the same?
