Ask different villagers to join you until you find someone dumb enough to do so.
Back in the day you could find soldiers in castles who would always join you but these days inhabited castles are pretty rare.

Well, it's not really a scale; the more quests you complete the more people will be willing to join up.

Pretty much any plain "Peasant" should join you, though if you're an elf or dwarf, they're labeled as just "Human." They're not terribly good fighters, though they can become pretty badass if they live long enough. They'll keep the bogeymen away, though.

Yes. Just keep going down.

Ah, thought you'd found a cavern. Just keep looking for a cavern, you should find one sooner or later.

One option is to make your own way. If you tunnel down with a fortress, then abandon (or have FUN), you can go with an adventurer and go down those tunnels.

You can check your known sites from 'Q'uest screen to see if you know of any caves. Asking about surroundings tends to reveal them.

Once you have high enough reputation (famous hero or so) pretty much everyone exept lords and ladies will be willing to join you. Before you get your first named kill you will be unlikely to find anyone though, and after that you will only be able to get scrawny peasants and the like for a while.

I created a medium sized basic parameter world with medium savagery and a larger number of civs than average (I think) and I have fortresses all over the place, in settled areas anyway. Random villagers never seem to want to join me but soldiers always join and I seem to have plenty of them around.

Actually I got two guys joining me right off before doing anything, but it could be beacause I started off with a demigod level character.

No, it's more like starting in "easy mode" because you get more attribute and skill points to start with. I think that's the only difference.

I didn't put ANY points into social skills, so if people joined me more easily then it would have to be because they take your total fighting skill into account or something.

I figure I might as well start in easy mode until I have a handle on everything.
