Noob wonders what to do...
« on: March 24, 2011, 02:15:41 pm »

I've been playing fortress mode for a few months and have a pretty good handle on that, so I thought maybe I should finally check out adventure mode.

After dying about 20 times trying to take on titans by myself with no armor, I finally figured out that I could get some companions, kill wolves, butcher them, sell their bits, buy armor, get quests, kill more stuff, sell their crap, get better armor, etc etc. So finally I have some clue as to what I'm doing.

I've read everything on the wiki about adventure mode, but still I'm left wondering... What interesting things can one do in adventure mode other than go on quests to kill things? I mean I notice I can light fires and do a number of bizarre things but I'm not sure what the point is, or how to fully exploit the more obscure actions.

Maybe I should try starting out as a legendary demigod knapper outsider human who relies solely on throwing sharpened rocks?

What sort of things should I tweak in the worldgen params to make worlds more interesting for adventure mode?

In all honestly, that depends on what you like to do. I love chasing chimps around and lopping their heads off, and my collection of skulls has no contestant. (except that one guy with FB skulls....showoff)

Best thing to do is play fortress mode and make a nice labyrinth for your adventurer to go through. More fun if you make it trap filled (no cage traps) and turn traps on in the init file. Bonus points if you connect it to

Add some adamantine weapons/armor for your adventurer to find and place them behind a chained beast of your choosing.

You could always save your dwarf near an ocean, then add aquatic and underswim to the dwarves tags. Go wrestle some sharks and merthings. Collect walrus tusks.

Oh ya, and try adventuring in the genesis mod or one of the many change mods that are available. Not dwarf fortress to the D, but they're still loads of fun.

You could mod in some seriously powerful race of megabeasts, see if you can kill them :p

Dwarven Science: We do what we must, because, we're bored.

Every few miles, [the dwarves] stop the cart.  One of the dwarfs (sic) gets off, digs a hole down below the dirt layers, licks the bedrock, and then they know exactly where they are.  It's called GPS: Geological Piquancy Sampling.

Don't chained animals die on abandon too?

Actual jewelry made from precious metals studded with valuable gems is pretty rare; I would suggest that you build an adventurer from scratch and try to take out some civ leaders or whatever to collect epic loot.

Yes, right now it really is all about killing things.  Adv. mode sort of regressed for a while (although the night beasts are cool) because Toady dropped a lot of the things that made settlements interesting, such as inns, temples, etc.  BUt even when those were present there was still nothing to do there really.  Well, you could join a religion and talk to your god with the 'talk' command, but it never responded IIRC.

I haven't quite gotten bored enough to actually perform mods yet. I figure I'll try creating some custom worlds first.

Actually I had a pocket world that I created for fortress mode that has like 10,000+ megabeasts it but every time I'd ask for a quest the game would crash. I was finding hidden shrines and lairs practically every other tile.

Killing civilization leaders sounds fun though. Hopefully I can get some adamantine gear off of one.

I could be wrong, but I think you'd actually have to make adamantine stuff in a fort, abandon it, and then have your adventurer go to the fort and find said stuff in order to acquire adamantine equipment in adventurer mode without modding .  I have seen dwarf bandits and so on with masterwork steel stuff in vanilla adventurer mode, however; I'm guessing this is probably as good as it gets in an unmodded game.  However you probably are more likely to find valuable jewelry and such from civ leaders and their ilk.
