.22 Celebratory Succession Fort
« on: March 24, 2011, 12:17:33 pm »

.22 is out, and to celebrate, I was thinking of having a succession fort.

if so, we need to decide what kind of an embark we want. so far, I've been going for newby Volcano+river+forest+flux+deep and shallow metals+soil+clay, but it might be nice to try something more challenging.

we need to decide how succession works, I was thinking just the normal year per person.

we need to decide what mods to use, I think either vanilla or with the addition of Random Plants and maybe Fortress Defense.

Anybody interested?

players should acknowledge the start of their turn within a day or two, or be skipped. I'll try and remember to send PM's notifying them.

I'd like to try a succession fort, and if so, I'd really rather do vanilla (unless the majority has their collective hearts set on a certain mod)

I'm not picky about an embark type. Now that I know how to handle aquifers, I think I can handle most embark types to some point.

Why has it become a tendency to make celebratory succession games on every new release that invariably get abandoned within a few days?  ::)

I had no idea of any of that. This is the first time I've ever been in this forum.

Anyway, I'd still like to try this seriously. We can rename it if you like.

when turn do you want? Would you like to start the game, or would you prefer someone else did that?

To be fair, this a pretty good update. Medical treatment for dwarves would seem to be finally be more viable a solution than euthanasia, and hunter/crossbowman issues were apparently fixed.

I haven't swapped out for .22 yet. I'm in the middle of a fort in .21.

Everything but the new animals and fish depletion will carry over, so it is probably worth upgrading. I'm putting my .21 fort into .22. I'm game for the third turn or so. Vanilla is fine by me. I'm sure we can make any embark work. My personal preference is for something with at least a few metals of some sort since I like working with them, but otherwise I'm not picky. From my experience with succession games the best advice I have is to put a fairly short time limit that people have to acknowledge they are playing the game by.

@ billybobfred: Oh, damn, there was supposed to be a 'some' in there.

Anyways, as I heard, military dwarves get preference for grabbing bolts, and they go back to refill quivers. citation needed.

Ah well, I suppose now's a good a time as any to learn how to mess with save files.

So I guess I'll take the first turn then, if no one has any objections? I'm thinking 4*4 embark, definitely a river or freshwater lake (preferably not a brook), preferably volcano, definitely forest, definitely flux, definitely shallow metal, maybe deep metal, preferably only aquifer in one or two region squares, no mods, definitely at least a little soil, preferably clay, preferably at least a region tile or two of mountain. Should I try and get Evil or Good surroundings to make things more interesting? Or go for more challenging terrain that lacks some of the things i listed above? I could ramp up the number of megabeasts and caves, to make sure we have something interesting.

Also, anyone want a dwarf named after them?

What are the goals for this fort?

What is the winning condition?
What are the playing rules?

I hadn't thought about goals. Just keep going until no longer possible, i guess.

as for winning, this is dwarf fortress. What is this "winning" that you speak of?
Rules, just the standard, I guess.

Sure. I haven't started yet, I'm waiting for approval of my plans for embark.

Maybe after we have inns and gambling. for now, though, I'd prefer something a little more straightforward.
