Why would you Carve that?
« on: March 24, 2011, 12:01:22 pm »

I've noticed that, in my super-dining hall, there are a lot of engravings being done of bogeymen. At first, I figured it would just be one or two, and that would be that.

Nuh-uh. I've got more than ten separate engravings of bogeymen in the dining hall and other places. I did a little checking, and they're all by the same dwarf. Curiosity getting the better of me, I went to his status page to find what he found so fascinating about bogeymen.

Apparently nothing. According the likes section, he doesn't feel one way or the other about bogeymen.

Is this normal dwarven behavior? Does this happen to everyone else?

Random fixations are normal.  Enjoy personality.

I've got one bedroom that's got a incongruously large number of forgotten beast carvings. It happens.

How do you carve a forgotten beast? Aren't they randomly generated? Does the engraving change from one beast to another every time you look at it?

6 of the 8 golden statues in my trading hall are of one dwarf making masterwork cloth. Consider yourself lucky.  ;)

Lol, masterwork cloth...

It's probably an image of a particular FB, too.

If I remember correctly bogeyman are [FANCIFUL]. So they have a higher chance to appear in engravings then most other creatures.

The FBs are randomly generated on world creation. They get their names and dashing looks then, and from then on out they're separate and distinct entities for the rest of time, without changing. You can see a giant list of them in Legends.

Yeah, your dwarf is probably just engraving images of one that happens to be (in)famous in those parts.

Be grateful.  So far my stonecrafter seems to have a thing for figurines of various dwarves being made Queen of my civ.  I need to check the 20 statues I commissioned ... hopefully I'll have something better in there, but with my luck it will be lots of statues of an elf or elves striking down dwarves since I apparently picked a killed off civ that is still at war with the elves.

Ah, now I see. The forgotten beasts are the symbol of my local dwarven Government. Still bloody scary to have in the bedroom though.

One of the rooms has 6, and the other has 7. And I still have a few spaces of floor to do in one, and the entire floor in the other.

I have to find some dwarf children to assign to the rooms. :D
