General tips for a long-lasting adventure anyone?
« on: March 24, 2011, 07:07:01 am »

Hello there, first time poster here.  :D

Introductions out of the way, the adventure mode, for all its many qualities, irks me a little bit for the sudden speed at which your character can die (I tend to die very stupidly at times). Sure, it keeps the game interesting, but after a while redoing the quests to kill bandits becomes a tad repetitive. I'd really like to move forward from those and make a true "legendary" explorer embarking on interesting quests. For all hardy souls that have been there and done that, would you share your knowledge with a young adventurer?

Always have as many companions as possible, and don't go on any super-long voyages through patches of wilderness without castles to replenish companions/houses to rest in at night.

You may want to add this to the above:

- Don't go on vengeance crusades. It usually ends pretty sad for your poor adventurers, and besides makes the object of revenge even more bold.

- Don't have illusions about caves and caverns, ie their countless treasures, hordes of beasts to build your epicness upon etc. You'll end up throwing your protege off a cliff, just to end his misery.

- Don't have ANY illusions about your adventurer becoming ever so bold that he can finally go out on a quest ALONE to kill a night creature/titan/minotaur/roc/troglodite etc.

- Swimming across the ocean ensures the most hilarious of deaths. Same for fighting bogeymen. Really.

- If your hero survives long enough, forget everything I just said. And finally, go kill some elves!

Also, if you do encounter bogeys, don't attack them head on. Kite them around, then slice them in half one by one. After beating the first wave, you can sleep safely for the remainder of the night, provided that you don't move on the map. I think. Don't blame me if they do attack a second time, though. Or, better yet, spend the nights in houses/with companions.

Otherwise, do as freeformschooler said (and get a shield, because no shield + dragon = you have deceased) and avoid night beasts to begin with. They're notoriously difficult to kill on your own, and even with companions can absolutely decimate you. Once you become legendary though, you'll be chopping them in half easily. :U
Bandits are much better for getting that initial training, since they're both fairly managable and numerous. Their leaders can be tricky, since they're often damned good at dodging, but as long as you get in the first hit, you should be fine.

Also, SET CHARGE DEFENSE TO DODGE. It's no big deal if a small enemy bumps into or rushes by you, but getting charged by something massive (i.e. a titan) could easily become your doom. And at the same time, don't charge said massive opponents. More often than not, you'll be knocked down. It's very effective to do against enemies of equal or smaller size, but bigger enemies can be like running into a wall. A large and angry wall of muscle/blubber with teeth and/or weapons.

Oh, and kill ranged enemies quickly, or stay behind a tree. They will hit you eventually, and you should assume that it's going to hurt.

Do not chase after your companions when they see a random bit of wildlife in the distance and decide it deserves immediate, brutal death.

I usually hit the travel button when they charge into a herd of rhinos. :p

And thank you all for your suggestions, I have now survived long enough to get to the point lords and ladies give me quests. Mind you, I was one-shotted by the target. xD

Armour. And dodge. Also can try making a stealthy adventurer and throw things at other things from distance. Arrows and bolts don't lose power if thrown rather than shot... or so it was, at least.

Incidentally, I was wearing a looted helmet. The monsters' fist would have none of it when he bashed my skull in. :p

I'm not 100% positive on this, but having a decent recuperation might also help you survive otherwise fatal wounds, particularly cheap ones like being fully armored and getting one-shot through the throat with a crossbow bolt. Had one adventurer myself that had that happen, and immediately thought, "well, soon as I bleed out, that's it," so I made sure to take every one of those things with me. Not only did I manage to kill them all, but was able to rest, and managed to recover, though that adventurer had a permanent long, straight scar on his throat.

I just started messing with adventure mode and I was getting instantly killed until i figured out the following:

- To start with just start as a demigod
- Get 2 companions from a fort before doing anything else
- Sleep in the woods during the day so wolves will attack you, then kill and butcher them. Pick up all the wolf products and trade them for armor starting with the major pieces.
- Go do the initial quest with your companions, loot that guy's stuff, etc
- Keep doing quests...
- Always butcher EVERYTHING and sell it until you get a full suit of good armor/weapon(s) just carrying the corpses to a shop and butchering all of them on the floor at once can save a little trouble.

Funny how much of a market there is for prepared wolf brain and sweetmeat. That was enough to get me going pretty well.

Always watch out for lashers and archers, especially in an ambush. Archers are dangerous because it's easy for them to get side or rear shots which are a lot harder to dodge or block. Lashers are dangerous because one hit can chip a bone and cause your adventurer to pass out from the pain.

Only sleep in the wilderness if you absolutely have to, even if you have a big warband of companions. Sometimes you get ambushed and don't wake up fast enough.

I've found these guidelines help to survive a lot. I haven't died* once since starting to use them!

1. Don't spend any of the points during character creation.
2. Throw out all of your starting gear immediately.
3. Find a bronze collosus.
4. Attack it.
5. ??
6. Profit.

*By 'haven't died', I mean that I haven't gotten even one kill.

early on, recruit a soldier from a fort who has gear you want.. if/when he dies, you can inherit it.

constantly grind bandits, until you have close to a set of armour and fighting/dodging/shield up to a respectable number
