Scientology?

Good lord, I occasionally forget that that's actually a religion.

And you're right, the cult of the Pythagoreans were also nasty to poor people.

I'm rather pessimistic myself that the majority of future generations will become free thinkers instead of relying on centralized ideals. I do hope I'm wrong.

... We're all shaped by centralized ideals.  It's called society and culture.

Of course, but I think you know what I mean; having a majority that looks beyond what they have at first glance. Also, I was talking in another thread about how religion changes natural empathy more often than societies and culture (or at least the more modernized ones).

Religion is no more confining in thought then any other part of society.

Yeah.  I just get kind of pissed at the folks who reject religion at first glance because it's trendy.

I don't have any big fight with atheists or Christians, though the hard-line folks for both sides tend to kind of creep me out.  It drives me nuts, though, that I see a lot of kids my age going along with this sort of "I am totally NOT RELIGIOUS because that is IRRATIONAL" attitude, and then engaging in rank hypocrisy in so many other areas...

*sigh*

Complain, complain, complain =)

@Criptfeind: Also, I agree.

That raises a great question: if we were all free thinkers, would approximately the same amount of people use their free thinking to let themselves put faith in matters religious? Or would the ratios be different? Hmm.

doesn't forget the poor? some religions would disagree

I can't think of any off the top of my head.

some would even do the poor more good if they had forgotten them, i'm thinking specifically of the caste system in india, if i'm not wrong it is justified by religion

Religion can be used to justify anything, from good to bad. It all depends on the context, and the preconceptions of the ones doing the interpretation of the religion's message.
For instance, strictly speaking the bible justifies stoning flippant teenagers, but I don't think that is being done nowadays (?)

(as an afterthought: I wonder if we ought to relive this beautiful ages-old tradition?)

Organized religion is just another means to an end. Whether that end is good or bad depends on the person using it. And your perspective. Even unorganized has some of that to an extent.

Does that mean it's inherently bad?

I'm not arguing that it's inherently good, just that it's not necessarily any better than science.

nah, i personally don't like religion, i'm one of those trendy teens, but i have many more reasons, and you're the one who brought the poor to the discussion, i would never have thought of them

Guys, science is a bad thing. It's been used to justify eugenics. And you know who used eugenics? Hitler. You don't want to be like Hitler.
