I believe you give others too much credit. Bizarre authoritarians are what many people would become if they did what they said in a religious debate. At least if they say things without thinking about them.

This argument is unfair and very strawman-ish.  Just because someone expresses an opinion about other people doesn't mean they'd necessarily enforce that opinion in a fascist manner.  I mean, I could twist the opposite view by saying "So, in your ideal world, militant atheists would be put to death for herecy?".

That sounds to me more like people who feel the need to show off their religion. "Look at me. See how devout I am." That kind of stuff is really annoying. But there are times when it's appropriate to pray in public. Upon finding out about Japan's recent troubles I'm sure there were people who were moved to ask God to watch over the victims. That kind of stuff should not only be allowed but encouraged. I don't think Jesus would find fault with it.

Right, I never said to opposite was correct as well.

And, I just wanted to know if that is what he truly wanted. Stifling free speech is all well and good, but I was trying to understand if that is what he meant, or if I should read it to mean he does not want evangelicalists.

One way to point out someone is straw manning is to do it back to them.

But let the sarcastic remarks fit the crime.

Your point wasn't "thought police are bad", it was "Often the center is the place to be".

It follows just as well from what you said as what he said.  He never advocated any kind of fascist enforcement of his opinion - you just added that bit on yourself to make him look bad.

I guess I could make it more literal and say "In your perfect world, noone would be allowed to hold anything other than central views" but that's basically the same as what I said before.

We're all born atheists.

To put it bluntly, this is a stupid sentence. You cannot belong to the demographic of atheism unless you have actively chosen to.

That follows the same logic of a baby being declared a member of any religious group.

Sorry. I just thought it was clear what I was getting at when I said "There's no need to convert children to atheism."
