However it also preaches that Christians should go out and spread the word of god.

Does it?  This is a real question, because I seem to remember reading somewhere that it said nothing about that.

The part where jesus encourages his apostles to 'fish for humans'.
I guess he meant that.
Right. The previous part was condemning those that used their apparent piety to gain temporal power and influence. This is something that has always been a problem, even with atheism.

I am pretty sure you meant temporary power because temporal power is just too awesome of a power for public show-offs to have.
Regardless, you're right -- Jesus condemned people for using spirituality and praying as bait for basically just attention. BUT, going out and gathering followers into your faith was fine because I guess you didn't or don't have to be a televangelist to do it.

And here's where I condemn bible colleges.

Temporal
adjective

1. of or relating to time
2. of limited time; not perpetual
3. of or relating to the material world; not spiritual
4. lasting a short time only

This is me being pedantic :)

I don't think I've ever even heard definition 4 before.

And 3 is seriously obscure.

Also, that's not pedantry, since that's actually what Shonus meant.

Not really, although it does get far more play in sermons than anywhere else these days. Still, outside of sci-fi followers, you're as likely toget that definition as any othr.

Yeah, sorry, I had never ever heard either definition 3 or 4 actually used or referenced before, thanks for clearing that up for me.

Having to go to a bible college to become a preacher. I condemn that belief.

Huh.  I was already quite used to 'temporal' in meaning 3.  I'm also used to hearing it with an accent on the 'o' for that meaning, but I doubt that's correct or anything.

I am sorry, I don't understand.

Hey, anyone can start a following of their own.  But if you're going to be a preacher of the Lutheran Church, then if you want them to officially recognize you, they're going to want some proof that your beliefs actually represent the church's as a whole.  Otherwise you might as well be some whackjob who preaches about interstellar 747s and nuclear bombs and volcanos while calling yourself a Lutheran preacher.

Some groups find this more important than others.

Being a minister takes skills like every other job, why not a place to learn how?

On the other hand, there is nothing stopping you from going and being one right now, you almost certainly will not succeed... Maybe if there was a place you could go learn the skills needed...

Yeah, but it's not really a common word outside of scifi context. Earthly and worldly are much more frequently used.

Not that I'm criticizing you. I'm just not surprised that people would misunderstand.

What skills are required that are learned at a bible college?

Besides, you know who else disliked people who were openly religions?

Jesus, in Matthew chapter 6.
5: And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by men.  I tell you the truth, they have received their reward in full.
6: But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen.  Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.

jesus himself was quite openly religious, i'd think... but i generally think of him as the king of hypocrites
