Dwarf Fortress turned me into a monster
« on: March 23, 2011, 08:27:53 pm »

So I found magma for the first time in my current fort. 4 years later I have more food than I could ever want and more animals than I can ever need. I'm sure it hits every DF player about this time. Magma can solve every problem right?
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

What have I done??? What led me to commit such heinous crimes? PETA will kill me surely for this.

So I'm wondering how long it took other people to start senselessly murdering puppies and kittens and who knows what else. Did you hold out for awhile thinking you will be different? Or did you immediately find ways to murder with magma?

Meh.. PETA can burn in the magma for all I care.
And no, I have been playing DF for a while, and I have never thought of doing any of that I do in DF.

Why wait?  The best way to learn to swim is to be tossed in naked by your mother at 3 months.  That's how you learned how to swim, right?  Anyways, I never really hesitated for the atrocities I commit, although to be honest I don't commit that many.  Instead of slaughtering dogs, I make them war dogs, cage them, and release them when goblins breach my outer defense.  Instead of killing off migrants, I put them to use hauling stone and building walls.  I tend to conserve more than I waste, and will find a use for near-any resource.

Except for cats.  They get the pit.

Not sure what you meant here, but I was merely asking how long it took people to kill puppies in DF, not real life  :-\

Now that I think about it I'm not sure why throwing a puppy into magma is more morally heinous than butchering said puppy for meat/bones/leather. Perhaps it is because the death served no purpose?

I should probably set up an animal shelter and trade my excess animals away so that I feel that they are going to new homes where they can be cared for...

Pretty much what she said.
Except I use excess cats for leather and food, nothing goes to waste.

I have a strict population-control regime going on, and animals are the only things affected. I make cats [AQUATIC][IMMOBILE_LAND] as a preventative measure, and all non-pet animals are slaughtered immediately.

I used to be lenient for cats, and butcher them on birth, but if one of the litter manages to adopts, that's another set of little kitty paws tracking rhino-lizard blood over your recently engraved floors.  Not to mention another little security risk leaving dragonfly corpses in your fucking doorway just before that one ambush shows up!  No, cats are kill on sight, sometimes their owner too, for good measure.

Sounds like you need a two+ z-level deep pit, filled with enough cats (that are allowed to breed) so that anything that falls in gets attacked because of the crowding.  Then, arrange for unexpected "guests" to "drop in" and visit said feline moat.  ;D

This is exactly what the poster is talking about.

Girlinhat, I know for a fact you know how to mod cats out.  Yet you kill them in game, on sight.

I'm not letting myself off the hook, either... They're still in my raws, too.

When you send the dwarf to pull the lever, you intone "Release the hounds", don't you.

Is there any way to make a living creature act like a structure?, say a mod that allows installation of (or innate) beehives into war animals, such as dogs? So when they bark they shoot bees at you?

I do this all the time with a dodge trap above it,  mostly so its that enemy archers waste their ammo before entering my firing range but the occasional Noble, Lyemaker, DiplomatGoblin that winds up in the pit with the cats is always good for some laughs.

Why couldn't my vampire Hammerer eat someone useless, like a migrant? Instead, she went after my only gemcutter.. but sadly there were no witnesses, so I convicted someone's pet duck as the murderer.  It got off easy, with no beatings or jail time.  >.<

Except for cats.  They get the pit.
Male cats get tossed into the caverns to play geonaut. Female cats get spayed by a 10-z drop.
