Several (To me) odities.
« on: March 23, 2011, 07:13:01 pm »

My hermit keeps tripping over something (Her cat, her dogs, herself, some rocks, i'm not sure what), the laison from my home came, and instantly gave me the "A diplomat has left unhappy" message (Maybe because there's only one, lonely dwarf, so it'd be a waste of his time?), and I'm getting a snowstorm in a SCORCHING climate. Anyone want to try to explain any of these happenstances to me, or perhaps share any of their own?

Edit-- Actually, over the scorching sand desert it is a snowstorm, over the tropical ocean it is raining. Making it even more strange in my eyes.

for the diplomat ... do you have an expedition leader selected in your [n]obles screen?

for the weather ... do you have temperature turned off?

Tripping? What do you mean by that?

The weather is strange, but not unprecedented. Probably not meant to happen in Dwarf Fortress, unless Toady's simulation of weather is even more godlike than was previously apparent... Actually, let's go with that.

I'm guessing he meant the hermit is doing that "more than one creature in this square, so one has to lie down while the other passes" thing. I'm also going to second krenshala's guess that there is no expedition leader, since the hermit can't vote himself into office and there's nobody else alive (?). If so, fear not! You can manually appoint an expedition leader on the nobles screen.

Actually, there's no positions on the nobles screen NONE.

I had this issue.  The trick is to make your hermit the expedition leader by re-assigning him to the position, THEN disposing of the other 6.  Or give the hermit social skills to begin with and he's naturally selected.  It particularly sucks because with no expedition leader, you cannot assign a militia captain, and thus your hermit will always run from things and never wear armor.
