I've asked about this in another topic, but I'm going to ask here so more people might see it.  I've decided that the only way I'm going to get information about the locations of certain features like demon fortresses is to find them using a hex editor with the world save file.  Demon fortresses are convenient because we know exactly how many of them there will be in a world of a given size, so all I have to do is search for character strings that appear x*y times, where x*y are the dimensions of the world.  From there, I might be able to find the coordinates from the nearby data.

I'm guessing that there's a hex editor out there somewhere that can do this, but before I start trying them out, I figured I'd ask if anyone else knows of one right off the top of their head.

If I can find feature and coordinate information for fortresses, then it may be possible to use that information to crack the locations and properties of other features, like magma pipes, volcanoes, and adamantine tubes, and perhaps even splice them into other locations.  This may enable to some degree the direct embark location editing that we've all wanted for so long.

So, is there such an editor under the GNU Public License?

Diso Faintpuzzles was born in 120.  Although accounts vary it is universally agreed that Diso was chosen by fate as the vanguard of destiny.

In the early spring of 143 Diso began wandering the wilds.

In the early spring of 143 Diso starved to death in the Horn of Striking.
