Best Paradox Interactive/other 4X games?
« on: March 23, 2011, 10:34:18 am »

I'm quite a bit late to the 4X crowd and I'm coming in at a time when as a mainstream genre it seems to be dying off. However, Paradox Interactive is pretty faithful in making 4X games despite the market's suggestions. I recently picked up Crusader Kings and a friend got me Europa Universalis II for free and my God I'm in love. I remember creating a thread about why people liked 4X games so much and now I understand... there's just something about it. It's like trying to explain why I like Civilization so much -- I can't.

The only thing I dislike is the space flight sim/4X mesh "genre" that has a fair amount of games in it. Other than that, what would you all recommend?

Oh, and another thing: I do prefer 4X games where you can pause gameplay to make decisions  :P

I'd recommend EU3 + expansions, if you don't already have it. It's less historically accurate than EU2, but hellishly good fun. I've racked up 541 hours on it so far.

I've been wanting to get EU3 but I think it would be a waste as I read on their forums that, inexplicably, EU3 requires Pixel Shader 2.0 and I doubt I have that on my netbook as it's complained about pixel shader incompatibilities before :( still worth a shot though. I wonder if Steam has a demo...

Well, since you're not asking for games that don't have much micromanaging, I can recommend Aurora.

Aurora is great, I love salty tears inducing levels of micromanaging. That's one of the reasons I love DF. The only problem is it crashes a lot for some reason when I try to do some things but oh well it's indev.

That makes sense. Civ is a 4X game itself. Xplore, Xpand, Xploit, Xterminate. Pretty much all things Civ right there.

Yes  I've been stuck with this netbook for the last about a year just because I don't really have the money to upgrade and if I did I would be saving it for a better place to live.

Though I doubt it's that which makes it crash as it crashes on my bro's ATI Radeon-powered 2ghz desktop compy in the same places.

How do you deal with the resolution :O ?

I thought you couldn't play Aurora without a big monitor because of the lack of scrollbars.

There's a resolution extender program some people use.

My driver's fancy toolbar thingamabob let's me change my resolution to whatever I want provided I cope with scrolling the display around the virtual screen.
