Multiple Forts?
« on: March 22, 2011, 11:35:22 pm »

Any way to do it without doubling all my save data? I'd like to hold onto a current fort and play around in the same world with one or two more. I'm not liking the "abandon" option, as I don't quite know what that means to everything I've built, as well as all the people I've gained.

Abandon is exactly what it sounds like: Your people ditch everything and run for their wretched lives. Also, there's no way to play 2 forts in 1 world at the same time. You could double the save data, but you said you don't want to do that.

I wonder why that is...

Is it because of some limitation in the code, or is it too taxing on the program/memory to re-update the status of multiple forts along the same time line? If it's an issue of running two fortresses along the same time line, I don't see the problem as it's doubtful they'd ever interact with one another; I don't think there's code in there for that.

I think it might just be that he hasn't bothered doing it yet.  Seems like a logical addition later on.  You can retire an adventurer and pick it back up later.

This is exactly what made me originally question how to have multiple forts at once, lol.

Maybe once caravans are fully modeled, you could theoretically have multiple forts in a world that could trade with each other.

The ultimate incarnation of allowing multiple forts in a world would be to have an internet world server allowing different players in the same world... along with the Army arc  :D

That would be insanely difficult to keep up with, unless logging out meant your fortress became off-limits for attack. Doing otherwise would just make online for this game become as petty and one-sided as Mafia Wars and the rest of those moronic games where people gangbang-attack a single person with 3000 people.

The best model for online play has been to have a sync up every season or year.  That way, one player does a year, and when his year is done he can send a caravan or army to trade/attack/defend/loiter at another player's fort, or neutral site?  That group will arrive at the other player's location depending on distance, arriving instantly at a neighbor or perhaps years later, with higher skills and lower food reserves from the long journey, do their thing on the other player's side, and then return.  It wouldn't be real-time, but rather allow each player to go at their own rate, and synchronize data at a regular in-game time interval.

I suspect something like this will happen eventually, but we're talking something on the magnitude of decades away :P  Right now, just enjoy what you've got, ey?

Might be hard to reconcile the years between two forts in the same map. Say I stop playing "Fort 1" in the year 1059 and play a new "Fort 2" for 10 years. What's happened in the first fort in the years 1059 - 1069??

I think the idea was that they would autopilot, basically in a state of light stasis where nothing amazing happens, but things don't fall to pieces either.

Yes, you can, but it's headache inducing.

Open Dwarf Fortress. Start fort. Save game. Move Save file out of save directory. (To a directory named something not dwarf related within the save folder is sufficient.) Start Dwarf Fortress, make new start. Now you can start a second instance of DF, and play the other fort, after moving it back and naming the folder region 2.

Viola, two forts at once. Of course you don't have to do it with two separate game windows, but then you can only play one fort at a time, but still play two forts.

I'm surprised no one else has figured it out yet.

I was going to say the same thing. The fortresses already exist in bubbles of symbolic time. I can't see why a bit of semi-turn-based gameplay would be a problem for anyone.

Well if you remove the [MULTIPLE_LITTER_RARE] tag from dwarves I think they have like 2-4 children each time they give birth. And if you get enough mothers up on the pillars you can probably get a good waterfall going.
Ashes are technically fire-safe.

But that doubles the save files, and the OP said that was not desired.

well langdon in Dfusion thread found a way to 'Retire' a fort by using DFMODE from dfhack and swapping to adventure mode on a dead guy and Darius also found out you could in adventure mode go into different forts in fort mode. so you could have multiple forts running at the same time if you retire one and use adventure mode travel to walk between both. though you might want to turn the tame flag off pets before retiring.
