Back when I was learning English, I found it useful to play adventure/RPG games (in particular RPG games. In particular, and at the beggining, Ultima games). So I was thinking, "hey, now that I am learning German, I could try the same trick for it".

So I was wondering, does anyone have suggestions for abandonware/freeware rpg games in german?

Try stranded 2.
Its a survival game made by a german developer.
Plus since you know german, you would have the bonus of accessing(and understanding) the things made by german community. The german community has modified the game enough to actually include physics.

Hrm, despite being German, I neglected the local freeware scene the last few years, playing mostly English Games 
Well, let's see...

Vampires Dawn is a quite popular German game made with the RPG Maker.
C-evo, a freeware game similar to Civilization that was translated to many languages.
UFO: Alien Invasion is a game like X-Com, but in 3D based on the Quake Engine. It also has lots of translations available.

You can still play it, the game is not that german heavy, it may help you.
It even has an english version you know.

Well, the original Diggles: Myth of Fenris was in german. if you look hard enough you can find some links around here somewhere.

Play popular games that have been translated into multiple languages.  X-Com, for example, lets you pick your language when you start.  You will learn the words for "Laser" and "Plasma" pretty fast I'm sure, and I bet "Autocannon" sounds really cool in German.

OpenTTD has tons of languages, FreeCol has quite a few as well, although I'm not completely sure either of them have German.

I dunno if MadTV counts at all. It's an um.. TV station sim, not exactly easy to squeeze into a genre. Great game, and why I started learning German. I think Germany has a huge D&D community too (along with other medieval fantasy stuff), might want to ask around online, and maybe just spectate an online game or something.
