Greedy Tax Collector
« on: October 12, 2006, 04:11:00 am »

I had carved out my rooms for my nobles and had double engraved them to get them to the necessary 'need' level required. However, I ended up receiving a tax collector who decided her gold fetish would have absolutely no bounds and proceeded to swipe every gold item produced from around the fortress. Unfortunately a couple of these gold items were masterpieces, and after the greedy tax collector nabbed them at no cost whatsoever they were deposited in her room. This proceeded to bump the room to "throne room" status, which in turn then proceeded to severely piss off pretty much every other noble (especially the high-ranking ones). Is there some way to get around stuff like this, or do I just have to temporarily de-assign the room and hope all the stuff gets carried back? Or maybe assign my baron/king to the little 2x3 room..?

The problem I see with part of this is that if I re-assign the room or give her another, she'll probably just go and snag any gold stuff again..

Edit: I just noticed that even though I went through the last 10 pages of the bug reports, this was somewhat addressed here: http://www.bay12games.com/cgi-local/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=5&t=000299

I have a solution to that one:  I think your dwarf is just itching for an appointment with Madame Flood Room.

...more seriously, though, maybe noble acquisitions should be limited based on rank?  It doesn't make sense that a bookkeeper can claim as much as the King.

Good point Aquillion!

The lesser nobles should know their place. I see this weird pecking order where the the top dwarf "appropriates" an item, which allows the noble under him/her to do so. Rise, lather repeat.

Aside from the strange clothing phenomenon, they should limit there acquisitions in that manner, based on the amount of storage they have.  If they don't, it's a bug.

Also, what's this about owned items increasing the room value?  There was something earlier about a stockpile doing this, but I can't get it to happen.  Items in a room (including non-building furniture) aren't seen by the room valuation function, unless something's really messed up.

The nobles do have several internal ranks.  It might be according to their order in the table in the [?] help.

Its true. I make only "decent" rooms for my nobles, but now, when i checked - they are bloated with stuff and became "splendid" or "great".

Hmm.  What about items inside of chests?  Wouldn't those increase the value of the chest, effectively transmitting their value to the room, or did you handle that?

Alternatively, could it be counting for the favored-material multiplier, even though you didn't have it count for the total value?

Yeah, its not the number of items that she acquired that bothered me, as all nobles eventually fill their rooms, but that the items seemed to affect the room value. Unfortunately, I don't have the save of the fortress so I can't check to make sure something else wasn't doing it. I figure that if the items weren't affecting the room value, then the problem may have come from accidentally placing a masterpiece piece of furniture in the room (could that be enough to bump a 2x3 room to legendary status?), though I don't place masterpieces in lower nobles' rooms for this reason.

Also, I remember one of the masterpiece items laying on the ground in her room was a gold scepter, but I can't remember the other.

I'll try and get this to repeat on my next fortress, but if I can't then it might have just been some kind of stupid oversight on my part.

The room valuation functions don't see those items, as far as I can tell, staring at them.  I'll have to look into it further when I can run the game freely again.
