Crysis 2
« on: March 22, 2011, 07:05:28 pm »

I'm on the fence about this game. I don't really know how it will run or if it's good enough to drop $60 on.

Does anyone have this game yet? What are its controls in relation to crysis 1? How about the sandbox gameplay and the different weapons options?

I already played the multiplayer demo, and it didn't do much for me.

Actual game market trend, let dumb everything down so vegetative trisomic 3 year old player can play it and enjoy is time.

Minecraft UI is very simple. There's only so many ways you can implement "simple" without copying something. We also gonna complain that it uses WASD?

Same here, I'm not going to buy it.  They throughly consolized and "lololKILLPERK!"-ed it.

But has anyone actually played it?

My roomate got it and beat the singleplayer campaign. It seems to be a rather mixed bag overall:

The Good:

The simplification of the suit modes is something I do like, it never made sense to me that strength and speed modes were separate.

A lot of fun sci-fi guns.

The Bad

The CELL faction could use some fleshing out. All of the soldiers fight pretty much identically, in contrast to the aliens. I was expecting some nanosuit soldiers to appear at some point in the game, considering they appear in multiplayer, but they never do.

Vehicles are much rarer and less fun to use, and don't appear in multiplayer at all.

The aliens have undergone extensive retcons-I won't spoil the plot, but they are no longer ice-themed in any way and use boring 'ol energy weapons instead of freeze rays etc. They don't use their flying squid exo-suits anymore at all, instead they use vtols just like the humans.

The levels are a lot less open.

One of the things I was wondering is if the prone and leaning modes are still possible. Are they?

If I ever got a computer powerful to run it I might get it, but I really only care about the graphics because it IS crysis. How are they? Lots of fancy shaders?

Is stealth still in as a legitimate path?
Also I hate retcons with a half-assed passion so whether or not I'll play it is unclear.

Stealth is more legitimate then ever. There are stealth kills now that are a nice touch, as opposed to picking up the enemy and throwing them (although you can still do that too) You will need to get the suit upgrade that silences footfalls for stealth to be really useful though. All of the suit modes seem to be equally useful from what I saw, my roomate seemed to spend more time in stealth mode then armor mode. As stated before, strength and speed mode are integrated more seamlessly into 'power mode' which automatically activates when you jump or sprint etc.

The retcons of the aliens are indeed silly, it's probably the #1 thing about the game that bugs me, with the lower prevalence of vehicles being #2. A lot of the stuff that made the first game so good are still there, and other areas have been improved upon, but a few aspects of the game were certainly a bit more fun in Crysis I, IMO.

How is the third Pinger supposed to work? The first 2 had plenty of marines there to distract them and allow me to hit that red thing on it's back but for this one I'm all alone and the tactical info basically says "go hit it's weakspot you dumbfuck" but doesn't give any clues on how to achieve that considering it can see through stealth and is permanently locked onto me.

Also, how far into the game am I?
