gem blocks

Basically, i would like an option to make gems into block. This would allow you to make a diamond tower or a ruby fortress.

It is a bit crazy as it is to have Gem windows.

Gems and even giant gems represent a very small amount of actual substance.

It would require a LOT of gems ot get a block... ignoring the magical gem windows that is.

You can mod it in, actually, if you really want.  Any material can be made into a block, including bones, leather, cloth, and blood.  You can't make blocks of swords, mittens, or flutes though, because these are items, not material types.

I think the implausibility of gem windows depends on how you picture them. A mosaic gem window, does seem a bit silly.

It is that a Gem window uses up a single gem. If it used quite a few handful of gems... heck I could see a Mosaic gem window (though I always imagine it having a lot of ordinary glass)

Some gems do come in high enough quantities to create a gem window. Though the game doesn't REALLY handle that as a square of gems gives one gem. For example Quartz is a common crystal that is a lot more rare in Dwarf Fortress then in real life. Realistically a block of quartz would be whole pile of quartz gems.

Also what would a Gem block even be?

That would be hilarious to have a tower made out of swords and beds.

This is a finely-crafted sword block.  It menaces with spikes of beds and is adorned with hanging rings of door.

That shouldn't even be out of line for the more outlandish planes (realm of the god of dreams eg.). A block of bones would be just that: a number of specific items with a common characteristic, grouped together, and treated like a single item in the game.

I've always have gem windows take multiple gems for me, though they were raw and cut gems.

If you built it into a wall, would it become a blade barrier? :)

You could have berries on the rocks and the dwarves would say it was "berry gneiss."
You should die horribly for this. And I mean that in the nicest possible way.

This is a well-crafted bed.  It menaces with spikes of Great Axe and hanging rings of Crossbow Bolts.

I cant mod.
Also

Look at your fortress, now back to mine, now back to your fortress, now back to mine.
Sadly, it isnt mine.
But, if you stopped using stone for your fortress and switched to gems, it could be like its mine!
Where are you? Youre in a nobles bedroom, in the fortress your fortress could be like.
Whats that? its a wall, made of stone blocks. look again, the wall is now DIAMONDS! anythings possible when your fortress is made of gems and not stone blocks.
Im on a Forgotten beast.
