Abandonware is a thing of the past now that we have GoG. I at least hope they will somehow manage to get even older games on their catalogue someday.

Weep pixels.
Pixels? Pfft, I weep voxels!

Eventually games will reach a point where they cannot improve graphically anymore.

It isn't too long now.

The sad truth hursts me and my outdated rig -_-
Upgrade after the cap is hit! You get better life of computer then.

Also, I prefer open source games. Nothing quite like playing a game you just compiled yourself.

I remember playing the Italian Job game and thinking "Wow, these graphics are amazing!"
I remember I bought that when new (well, probably not long afterwards anyway).  I think that was the last time I actually had a cutting-edge graphics card.  Since then I've always been a bit behind the curve.

Anyway, ISTR thinking it was a little "glass-walled" in places, and I think a later version, redone a la GTA3+, might be have been interesting.

But then I'd been spoilt by the likes of Carmaggeddon (whose graphics are a bit aged).  And TIJ was always supposed to be a "do the stuff in the movie" game.

I currently think the market is WAAAAAAAAAAAAY too graphic based.

No not games I mean people.

My brother for example will NOT touch a game from outside the PS3 era because of the graphics. The issue is that he isn't really alone.
This makes the gamer child in me weep. Weep pixels.

+1.

There is nothing grey about abandonware. You don't forfeit your copyright or intellectual property by not selling it.

That being said: I love it. But I would love game companies a tremendous amount more if they would open source their old games.

Not fond of it.

Find out who owns the rights, and pressure them to put it out on Steam or a similar service (depending on who it is).  They did it for X-Com, they can do it for the game of your choice.  The old Final Fantasy games got re-released on more modern consoles, and I've got a 100% legit CD of old Sega games re-released for the PS2...with savestates included, hallelujah.  Or go buy it off eBay.

Give me a choice between a great game that I could pirate, and a good game that I could get legally, and I'll take the good one thank you very much.

...or you know, pressure the game designer to release it for free or to just link to the abandonware site in question. You can't milk a cash cow forever.

Well, half of the abandonware titles are abandonware because it's not clear who owns the copy right and nobody cares in the first place. So you're first going to have to find out who to put pressure on anyway.

You guys gotta be careful where you  go with this topic. The SMT thread got closed because Ochita linked to a rapidshare of SMT1 and 2. Be VERY careful where you go with this topic.

Interesting story on Slashdot today; apparently Google tried to obtain the legal right to publish all out-of-print books as long as they sent a pre-set amount to the rightholders.  I guess there's precedent in the music industry or something?  Anyway, they got shot down, and it's very VERY clear to me that they would be in deep shit if they tried to give those books away for free.

So...um, I guess that's something to think about.

Abandonware is great. If the company cant be bothered to sell it anymore, them i'm not going to bother buying it  :P

*side note

I emailed Norm Kroger not long ago, trying to get him to sell 'Age of Rifles' on GoG or something. I get masses of people trying desperately to buy it, some relenting to spending top buck on ebay for it. I stated he could easily recoup his losses(Whatever they would be) in releasing it to GoG. It's a great gem. Never got a reply  :P

And when they release it on Steam or as part of a retro compilation, you're going to pay money for it, right?  Having the right to publish something also gives you the right to say "It's not profitable to do this right now, maybe I'll do it in five years".

Shit, imagine if any other artistic industry EVER had such impatient fans.

Hey, I remember ripping a friends X-Com disk. I paid for it the second it came to Gamersgate. I'm not adverse to paying small bucks for epic classics. I wish it were more common, but most either don't care or don't know anymore. I think its more important to keep your game out there, than simply deny everyone access to it, despite it being out of distribution for years. Its just pure corporate laziness/selfishness, they don't make a buck from not releasing it as abandonware or 'protecting' it.
I would have never bought X-Com when it came back, if I hadn't enjoyed it in my childhood. And if I ever saw a copy to buy I would have! (And did.).

Peoples games should be out there, not hiding withdrawn from society because they are too tightfisted to either GoG it or release it. The 'Intellectual property' argument is Bs, as no one looses a buck when its out of 'print'. If they reprinted it, different story altogether. As with X-Com.

Bottom line: Any company whining about abandonware, GoG it or stfu.
