Abandonware
« on: March 22, 2011, 09:06:38 am »

I personally am a large fan of abandonware. What about the rest of you?

For those of you who do not know, software that is considered abandonware is old software that the original publishers have stopped selling and supporting. Abandonware is either financially unviable to continue selling, or is software that has been made obsolete by more recent developments. It varies from software type to software type, but usually five to ten years old is the start of when something becomes abandonware.

It should be noted that, in a lot of cases, abandonware is a form of software piracy, as often the copyright still applies even when the publisher has abandoned it. However, often publishers do not try to enforce the copyrights, as they do not really have anything to lose, since they have already abandoned the software.

How does the rest of bay12 feel about abandonware?

Legally, it's oh-so-very gray.

Personally, I don't give a shit. The companies don't either, it seems.

I love it. I'm the type who can be perfectly happy playing all the old dos and supernes games that I've got hard copies for back in Fargo here in Iraq on my laptop.

Eventually games will reach a point where they cannot improve graphically anymore.

It isn't too long now.

Hopefully when that point is reached they will have more time to work on things other than the graphics while developing their games.

Or they're just going to put the same amount of effort into other things and release the games a little faster... =/

I didn't have a PC / a PC powerful enough when a lot of abandonware was current so, being able to go back, I've gained an appreciation for abandonware. As others have said it's a grey area legally. I also believe these games should be preserved as they are part of video gaming history and it disturbs me to see them fading away.

A lot of it that I've tried felt really dated and simplistic of course, but there's some real gems like Ultima VII.

I currently think the market is WAAAAAAAAAAAAY too graphic based.

No not games I mean people.

My brother for example will NOT touch a game from outside the PS3 era because of the graphics. The issue is that he isn't really alone.

I remember playing the Italian Job game and thinking "Wow, these graphics are amazing!"
