Firefox 4 geek gasm
« on: March 22, 2011, 07:44:17 am »

Today is the official release date, so in my geeky glory I went to the website and downloaded! OK, so it won't be official until later today, but I can always update again later. Now I'm using the RC

And it's freaking amazing. Tabs are on top, pandora radio permanently pinned as an app-tab, The menu is integrated next to the tabs, meaning I can just turn off the standard menu and not lose any functionality. I can now pull tabs off the main window and recombine them without reloading a page, and will be able to easily drag off playing videos (and recombine them... oooo).

The bottom "add-on bar" is now off by default, and information pops up for information like where links go to and such.

There are awesome new features too, so I can organize tabs and... oooo

And I even hear that they support universal menus, so here's looking at Ubuntu 11.04.

Anyways, I'm having a geek-gasm, and I hope some of you people can empathize.

Huh. I hadn't even heard about this (since I mostly use Opera), but I'm looking at the features list and well...it's not quite enough to make me want to switch but it'll definitely make it a lot nicer when I have to use Firefox because a page doesn't support Opera.

The tab organization sure looks a lot nicer than the one in Opera 11. Big icons are much much easier to work with than just merging a bunch of tabs. The new look is really nice too, how low the tabs were on the screen was always one of my biggest pet peeves with Firefox.

So I'm not quite having a geek-gasm, but pretty cool nonetheless!

No using. That's not what freedom is for.

Is it any better memory-wise or speed-wise?  Firefox seems to be getting more and more bloaty over the last few years.

(Also, does it annoy anyone else that it seems to want to auto-update like all the time?)

Edit:  And did they hide the menu behind another button?  Why on earth would they do that?

I tried the beta earlier this month, and it was fairly simple to change the interface back to normal.
the app-tabs sound awesome, though I'll wait until add-ons get updated. (Adblock+, ReadItLater, and CoolPreviews, to be specific)

'Eh, it doesn't look as bad as I thought it would, but I'd still like to keep my tabs in the same place. Heck, this could be the point I stop using Firefox, since I've only really been using it for the Gecko engine.

Most addons have been updated for ages... Probably since b8 I've had few problems with the most popular addons.

levi.  Check it out and you'll see.   You can disable updates.   They hid the menu because it gives you more space.  It's a good design idea and you'll see all major browsers doing it.  If you've used opera you'll find it somewhat similar.  That said, you're one click away from the old view if you so wish.  Firefox remains extremely customizable.

Before people start nitpicking, remember that you can always use other browsers and that you had ample time (and still have for future versions) to actually suggest changes or point bugs.  Criticizing on a non related forum won't fix an issue.

I might check it out, but I disagree about needing more space.  My screen is huge and the menu takes up so little space.  I'd rather have less mouse clicks to access something.

But that said, if you can disable it its not such a big deal.  :)

Out of curiosity, can you disable having the [X] button on each tab still?  As in have the one X button on the far right side?

Right click the menu bar and a menu pops up. On that menu is a setting called "Tabs on Top". Toggle it if you don't like where the tabs are.

Select customize off that same dropdown menu, and you can drag the various UI buttons around if you don't like where they are. You can also remove them completely (drag to the customize toolbar window that pops up) or add more buttons (drag from the customize toolbar window).

Anyone know why all the buttons are black with with white boxes around them now? It looks more clunky than before, and I can barely see the bookmarks button. (using personas)

I love it.

And since I work with browsers 80%-90% of my waking hours that really helps.

It's also FAST. Niiiicce...

So it's possible to drag the bookmarks button over back to the left?

Default positioning of everything is worse than ever, but easily customizable so its fine. In fact, the customization is much smoother and easier than ever before, so thats great.

I like it aside from the fact that WHERE DID MY RECENT HISTORY GO

D:

How am I supposed to navigate this way? I mean, it was bad enough when they combined the back button and forward button into a horrible mishmash that convinced me not to upgrade for the longest time, but getting rid of it completely!? :<

Edit: Found it, it's right click on the back/forward buttons now. I still wish there was a way to separate them into "backlinks" and "forwardlinks" though
