What is your opinion of Anonymous and their work?

I'm all for them and fully support their work
I support their cause, but dislike the methods used
Unsure / don't really care
I think they're just a bunch of bored kids
I'm against both their methods and cause
I think they're criminals / terrorists
Who?  (lol)

This is a bit over the top, I'd say. the sony case didn't seems to be going badly..
If it were me, and I found out a bunch of bored assholes were stalking my kids like that, I'd try to find one, tie them up, bring them to a dark, abandoned alley, interrogate one for the locations of as many other people in the group as I could, put a bullet in the back of their head, then post pictures of the corpse to Anon sites "for the lulz", then move on to the next one. But that's just me.
(note: If I ever have kids, it'd probably be a bad idea to ever mess with them.)

I hate the ignorant. They should learn or stay out of our way.
Ignorance can be bliss. And you group everyone together, as if everyone shares your opinion...

Akura: You'd probably struggle to get any info about accomplices from people who don't have the info themselves.

Yeah, that'd be pretty difficult.

I don't see anything out of the ordinary, they dox people all the time - sounds like they're only using them for the typical childish prank side, IE ordering pizzas as the article states.

Um, while some of it may be childish, other parts are not so childish. I'm pretty sure they could get into legal schist, considering a guy was convicted of hacking for accessing his wife's email without her permission to find out she was cheating on him.

It doesn't sound like they hacked anything in the case being mentioned. Maybe some light social engineering. Also, the thing about Anonymous is that they are anonymous. They mostly know better than to hack from their own IPs when they do take action

Anon is indeed hacking; the SQL injection and password cracking from HBGary would most certainly qualify as that. What they do is illegal, make no mistake about that. Whether it is moral or not is another can of worms entirely, which I won't get into since it would merely result in pointless bickering. In the more complicated attacks, like the HBGary incident, those few carrying out the operation are going to be protected out the wazoo, since they are the ones who actually know what they are doing. Those involved in DDoSing and other highly distributed attacks... not so much.

I'm just going to say that I support the ideals (Freedom of Information, etc.) and I find that the tactics are...well, questionable, but effective.

Also, anyone who thinks that Anonymous is "just a bunch of bored kids" or an "elite group of hackers" obviously hasn't done their research.

Anonymous consists of people from all over the demographical spectrum.  It's not just kids, it's not just hackers, it's not just Americans or Canadians or Brits. When someone says "Anonymous is everyone", they're right, in a sense: Anyone could be an Anon, because anonymity is not something restricted to one type of person.

Let's see... What would the protection be? Two or three proxy servers? That can be dealt with. Firewall?Embed in the HTML. Antivirus? Look at an open source one (there probably is somewhere) and engineer to avoid it. I feel that, properly prepared, they could be caught.

Now, as for the ideals, Anon doesn't have a group ideal because it's not a group. However, most of their actions are somewhat commendable in intent. Others... The linked story isn't quite so heroic. It's just going to happen that some Anon guys try to crack the NSA or something, and then shit hits the fan.

Oh I know that, I was replying /specifically/ about the Sony executive matter.

Oh, this is nowhere near 'over the top'. Look for applemilk (Emiry) or hal turner examples to see what anon does when they do mean business. Personal harassment is one of oldest and most successful /i/ tactics.

They could cruise the streets of any major city with a wireless laptop looking for unsecured networks. They don't even need to be unsecured really. I've heard of people using this method for other illicit purposes. What's worse is that from what I read the owner of the network is partly to blame for what their connection is being used for.

And there are a lot of people with totally unsecured networks. It's not like finding one is hard.

The law trails technology, all the more so because the ones writing the laws don't understand the technology.
