Good 4x games that are manageable/

Now I know this has been asked a lot, but here's my thing. I want a 4x game that HAS micromanagement, just manageable. Supreme Rule 2020 is 4x, and that's way too micromanaged. SE4 is on the border, and galciv 2 is a good example of a 4x game thats manageable, but at the same time Galciv 2 doesn't have much micromanagement.

EU is 4x to some extent, and certainly has less micromanaging than supreme ruler..

Master of Orion 1 or 2 are good choices.

EU is 4x to some extent, and certainly has less micromanaging than supreme ruler..
The amount of micromanagement in EU more or less scales with your empire. I always hate winning in Paradox games, because of this. (And I don't enjoy losing, even if on purpose)

Any amount of Micromanagement, is manageable, depending on the time and effort you wanna give to it.

So yea, Aurora is manageable, if you want  to place in the time and effort.

I find MoO2 to have some nice Micro, until you get about 20+ or so colonies, then it gets rather tedious.

I find MoO2 to have some nice Micro, until you get about 20+ or so colonies, then it gets rather tedious.

Build queues help a lot here.

They're also easy as hell. The problem with them nowadays is that I find it almost impossible to lose at Moo II unless I were to use bad ship design and combat tactics. I even won a game where I never colonized more than my home solar system.

I'd suggest Sword of the Stars, but if you actually WANT micromanagement, it might not have enough. It (with expansions) is great, but removes a lot of the micromanagement that you'd find in other games - planet management is similar to what you did in Moo I in terms of complexity, rather than Moo II (terraforming and infrastructure sliders to determine how much to put into those, instead of buildings on planets you've colonized, which is good, because in Moo II that always bugged me - after the 10th planet, why do I need to build 30 buildings on another planet again just to make it able to do anything? And then once you finish terraforming and infrastructure you end up deciding how much to allocate to trade for each planet instead of construction, whether to overharvest resources (permanently depletes them), etc). You're spending most of your time managing your ships instead of your planets, and ship construction is very fast at your homeworld and other similarly developed and resource-heavy worlds, so much so that you can make half a dozen ships per turn or so in the beginning to use as scouts - what limits you is that building them (and developing new colonies, and doing research, etc) costs money, and you have to get that money through taxes or trade.

Ship design and research is very detailed, and SOTS has tactical combat, unlike GalCiv II, and the research is actually important.

I've played GalCiv II (before I played SOTS, actually), and pretty much hated it, but some people like it.  ???

Anyone still play Distant Worlds? It lets you pick the level of micromanagement. Except for the terrible battle AI...

At some point, I actually found Lost Empire:Immortals to be enjoyable (well, before my old laptop died on me and I kinda forgot about it). While the amount of individual micromanagement isn't that great, as at most you're going to be setting colony priorities and funneling fleets to profitable worlds, this changes when you see just how much frigging SPACE your empire can eventually occupy. The star count for the largest maps goes up to 5000. Five. Thousand. Just remembering which of your worlds are which can be a little disorienting, but I've found it all manageable because of an acceptably sound UI. I really should get back into that game sometime.

For a slightly older game and a micromanagement on an entirely different level, try Imperium Galactica 2. Granted, I don't remember much about it now, but the sheer audacity of having to plan out your colony in regards to possible attack - as the enemy will literally drop tanks onto the map you're building on, and then battle your own tanks and defense emplacements in full realtime 3D RTS mode - is kinda refreshing. Also, espionage, sabotage, counter-espionage, and the like. Fun game.

Distant worlds has a good mix, so long as you don't mind watching the AI do dumb things with your empire occasionally. Controlling fleets is fairly annoying though (or was 5 months ago when I last played very long). The biggest downfall I saw was how easy it tends to be to tear the enemy empires apart. Maybe that's changed now...

Not to mention the second Age of Empires is pretty much better in every way.

However the correct answer to this thread is Alpha Centauri. It's the answer to every thread really.

Age of Empires 2 is definately the best of the AoE series, but I don't think it comes close to challenging AoM in gameplay. Tell me how it is better.

By definition, it is. If you want to take some other definition of 4x, you may, but the general definition of a 4x is:

As you can see above, AoM/AoE and similar games fall into the 4x category very easily. However, there are some other, more specific definitions.
