The Traveler's Council Chamber, Lower Toldron, United Provinces, Summer, 1005 A.D.
The Traveler looked up from his map of the world. Commander Bright was concerned. It was written on his face as plain as day and such things simply would not do. He raised a hand, and gestured for the Commander to speak.
"Sir, I am deeply concerned about the potential forces arrayed against us in East Toldron. A merchant drinking in a pub in the Kingdom of Brent, was discussing the great military defeat of the Greenblood Empire with some of their traders. It is possible our strength at arms is insufficient to unify Toldron, I believe we should delay the attack until the new year. If we had used the funds you..appropriated..." He let the sentence hang, the Commander was already visibly sweating through this. No one had delivered bad news to their leader yet. He had every hope the news would be reasonably received.
The Traveler sighed, theatrically. "Commander Bright..You are, uniquely familiar with the forces at our command. If it is your learned opinion that we are unable to successfully strike at East Toldron, there are other lands to bring into the fold. The teeming forests of North Stry, or an excursion into the mountains of east Villvale.. The men could reach those targets, yes? It is not a goal I would -like- to see fulfilled quickly, But it is certainly one we could explore. I am however disappointed. I wish to unify Toldron before the winter snows. The choice however Commander, is up to you."
The Commander, eager to be out of sight and rejoin his troops, exited the room, as Falstaff entered.
"You worry the man overmuch, Lord."
"I am well aware. Are you here to second guess my transfer of funds? I do expect a ..Significant return on my investment."
"Never, Lord. Though he was right. A stronger force of soldiers would see victory accomplished. I of course trust my phantoms will be more than sufficient to the task."
"No..He is right. Influence him towards an attack against North Stry. Then begin work on the project we discussed earlier."
Falstaff looked appropriately shocked, though the Traveler could tell it was a show. The man's mind burned with the endless possibilities available down the path suggested by his Lord. "Are you certain? The other nations may disapprove..And our own people certainly will."
"They will accept it if I declare it will be accepted. It is merely a stepping stone to greater things, after all."
