Horrors of the deep
« on: March 21, 2011, 01:49:22 pm »

Basically this is an idea I had to make exploring the depths a little bit more fun.
Inspired by the line "There are darker and more dangerous things han orcs in the depths of the world" from good old gandalf.

Anyway the premise is this- these are special features that have a 25% chance to appear per every 2x2 square aligned to the grid on the local region map. these are special events ehat trigger the release of something from he depths of the world upon your fortress but must be manually triggerred.
An announcement is triggered upon discovery along with a warning.
This way new players get a hint and experienced players can igore the warning and fire away.

Types of feature

1. Abyssal chasm- only on  ocean biomes- message- you have found a deep cleft in the ocean floor, beyond which the sun does not reach. you feel that anything that lurks within should not be awakened.

Activated when you drop something into the chasm. Spawns any aquatic horror.

2-Underwater ocean.-message- you have discovered amassive sea in the cavern, its waters perfectly still, it gives you a feeling of unease and should remain still. all other respects it is identical to chasm but can spawn the watcher of the water.

3-City of the gods found around caver layer 3 level. message- You have found an ancient city, older that time itself, deep within the rock. stone unknown to all the races of the world is used in its construction and pillars of a strange metal give off a comforting green glow. Piles of trwasure litter the streets but a voice in yourhead constantly tells you to leave this place and leave the treasure untouched. All the treasure does not show up on stocks screen and is forbidden. claiming the treasure causes 3 ancient gaurdians to spawn and attack.

4. sealed prison. found in cavern layer 2. message- You have dicovered a stange door, made on a metal that sucks the light away from its surroundings. unreadable runes litter is surface but their purpose seems clear- leave this door unopened. A skeleton lies nearby, clutching a glowing key that appears to fit the hole in the door. To activate, set task ongreen stone to use. Spawns any land horror+ 1 in 2 chance for named horror as well.

5. Skymetal rock. found anywhere underground surrounded by obsidian walls(caused by impact heat). message- you have foun a strange rock, made out of an unknown metal. scratching sounds are heard nearby and every fibtre in your body tells you to run.
Walls are 3 layers thick and mining gives skymetal- incredibly dense+ strong metal- essentially a blunt weapon version of candy. breaching the 3rd layer spawns 5 eldritch horrors+ 1 named horror

6- Temple of the warp.
Found at the very centre of the map, in x,y,z axises. message- You have found a strange circular temple comprised of a stone that seems to draw the heat from its surroundings. It has glowing red lines upon its surface that pulse in time with your heartbeat. The stone pillars posses releifs of faces in them. As you stare, the faves begin to move and scream as you realise that the sould of the people are still alive and are aware of being part of the stone. there is an altar in the centre that features many strange fronds. a skull is resting on the altar. As you move to pick it up, you realise that the strands are drawing it into the altar and it is absorbed. Then before your very eyes, a new face appears in the stone before you and joins in the screaming chorus of eternal agony.
Activation- order a dwarf to be sacrificed on the altar. afterwards, causes 1 horror to spawn at the start of every month.

Horror types- All horrors are trap immune, web immune syndrome immune, etc so only way to kill is in fisticuffs.

Attacks include biting, whipping with tendrils and acidic vomit breath weapon.

Its body is covered with Silvery coloured scales while the belly is purest white scales. The Silver scales Form a massive spined ridge running down its back. Its mouth is filled with millions of teeth.
Amphibious creature, immune to all statuses, Attacks are biting and Smashing isbody on the foe. Weak spors ar the belly and the inside of the mouth.

Watcher of the water-Identical to kraken but blind and Has a second layer of scales.

Land horrors-

Cyclopean terror- A Tentacled mass of black spines With a single glowing red eye in the middle. Its mere presence saps the will of your dwarfs.
Attaks include spine spearing, tentacle whipping and a breath weapon the has a 10% chance of causing one form of insanity.
Damaging the eye instantly kills it but many other areas so low hit chance.

Balrog-A towering horror composed of shadow and flame. It burns with the molten heat of the lands core. It holds a sword composed of pure flame. Attacks- Firebreath, Sword attack, Pysical attacks. Upon death drops Balrog's sword- Masterful candy 2h sword that sets what it hits on fire.(fun while sparring).

Blind Ravener- An eyeless Terror from ages past, It has six legs each ending in a massive spined talon and its back is covered with a strange organic armour. Beware its acidic bile. Attacks- Bite, Acidbreath, talons and swallow whole- low hit chance but instakill.

Eldritch horrors

Abomibation- A distorted humanoid covered in twisted spines of bone that pierce through the papery skin and intertwine. It slowly mumbles, Asking for a release from its torment, even as its body is driven to attack. Attacks- All wrestling attacks, Spine attacks. Gives dwrfs unhappy thoughts when near.

Horned beast- A bipedal lizard with a Spined tail And the face of a human. Its eyes seem to drain the life from those it meets.
Attacks- Low chance of insanity breath attack, Spines no tail, Stomp.

Fleshy pile- A towering Pile of corpses, fused togethe and animated by some unknown will, which has caused the skin to solidifyand become scaly. A massive, spined ridge prodrtudes from each spinal column. Attacks- Smash, Charge, Impale, Throw. Can destroy corpses to regenerate lost limbs.

Parasite- A tendrilled slug possesing a strange mouth and many glowing eyes. Beware its infectious bite.
Attacks- Tentril whip, Bite, push, Infect- if hits, kills dwarf and parasite and spawns an abomibation.

Ive run out of ideas for other land or eldritch horros so suggest your own and rate the idea.
(I think i went overboard on describing the temple)
Edit1-Added balrog, Living fossil, Blind Ravener, Abomibation, Horned beast, Fleshy pile and parasite.

Maybe people could mine into a single baalrog who upon death gives an adamantine weapon, Or into a drow or dark elf civilization.

I like these ideas, they're dangerious but not as much as the circus. Ancient temples and prisons (4 and 6) lend themselves well to procedural generation.

Anything that adds to the seemingly bleak underground is fine by me! I just think that they should be everywhere rather then restricted to one biome. Why Oceans?

Critical hit! It's super effective!

Well these cold also be in caverns, separating layers like deep pits. Or randomly across the land that connect the surface to the first cavern layer. There's more then just oceans.

the ocean trench is only underwater because i imagined it to be like the massive trenches you get out in the pacific ocean.
all others are found in regular caverns or a seperate cavern of their own.

Oceans don't get enough love.  An ocean-only "deep pit" would be pretty cool, but it would understandably have to be generated close to shore.  Otherwise, how do you find it?

Well, if you play an aquatic adventurer, and if the sea floor has interesting things on it, you would just naturally stumble across it.

The issue is that for the most part... The ocean IS a "deep pit" and it is unlikely to ever change.

I suppose the ocean one would have to be near the shore. Alternately, it could be an underwater cave- so a hollow in the rock perhaps? That was why I put in the cavern ocean- for a similar event but for those inland.

So a black metal door then, eh?

The "blunt version of adamantine" already sort-of exists. It's slade rock, found only in the testing arena though. Blunt weapons made out of slade kick the most ass.
