Practice making shit up at high speeds. When your party decides to sneak attack the town guard for no reason, you will not have a plan for the scenario.

Noted.

Either lampshade or horribly decompose the trope that new DM's start adventures in taverns ;)

Another troper? Yay! :D

I'll consider doing that... sounds like fun...

Also, the city's is fairly cosmopolitan, to the point where fully 7% of the population is composed of various unusual creatures (Mindflayers who would rather have a pleasant chat with you than tentacle-rape your face to get at your tasty, tasty brains or psionically enslaving you; A few intelligent undead; various planetouched; etc.) How should I work this into the campaign?

Also consider giving your guys bonuses for creativity or good planning and stuff. You know, like, if they want to kill the goblins by crushing them beneath a landslide before combat or if they try to burn the rope, then they would get extra benefits. Like, the goblins would have to work around difficult terrain first or the enemy would be pinned by the chandelier.

Hey! I didn't recognize ya, Darvi. Haven't seen you in LoLD lately...

I might give bonuses for solving problems via rube goldberg machines...

Ya I couldn't catch up with all my non-internetness and stuff <_<

Also, Rai kinda disappeared for a week before turning up again in my room. Huh.

Anyways, the 4e DMG had a paragraph or a page about that I think.

Uhh, I use Revised Third Edition... and I can't afford/find a copy of the DMG for 3.5e, so I'm using the SRD.

Eh, the point is to encourage people to find alternative solutions to their problems.

Unless they decide to dual wield team mates or something, then of course you should give them a "This is stupid"-penalty :P

But what if the teammates are halflings linked together by chain, and the half-ogre has a weapon proficiency in living weapons? ;)

let's try to get this back on track...

As I said above, how should I incorporate the various exotic inhabitants of the city into the campaign?

Now, I'm just an over expired troper who is obscenely familiar with D&D and Role playing in general, despite not having done all that much. I DMed a few games during Basic using effectively a RTD system, while I've *never* even played D&D. However, I think that world building is something I'm okay at.

How well integrated are the non and sub human population? Do they have equal rights? Do the willingly tend to ghettoize themselves? Enforced? Egalitarian equal society? How big of a culture difference is there? How well does the common human know about it? How well controlled is law, is it done by the Western Hero? how often will the mindflayer get away with noming someone? Start by answering those questions, and work from there.

Whoa. I was going to say something in that direction. But a lot shorter.

Basically treat the populace as if they were people in a city in RL or something.
