Androgenic alopecia (male pattern baldness)
« on: March 20, 2011, 05:07:32 pm »

Worried about hair loss, I had visited a dermatologist 1-2 years ago, asking for advice.
After taking a hasty look on it, he just said "It's genetic, you're fucked."

It's still in the stage, where it starts above both temples and starts wandering upwards, so it's not to late to do something about it.
I'll be consulting another dermatologist on the issue in the near future, before I take any action.

I just wondered, if anybody experienced something similar, what course of treatment they recieved and how it worked out.

The link to said medical condition.

Not much help, but bald people with cool beards look awesome.

and it's not "going bald" if you shave your head and say "new look"

This. Take a page from Father Kane's book.

Of course, you could always just spend several months on an extreme workout course and threaten people who try to make fun of your baldness with physical violence. [/notserious]

In any case, if you can't reverse it, I'd recommend not trying to hand onto what hair remains once it gets bad and just shaving the rest off. Bald is a look that can be easily pulled off.

From what I've read, your beard follicles are safe.

Well its not like I'm already dealing with bald spots. It's only a receding forehead right now.
So most of the advice here won't apply until I'm at least 30 to 40.
It's just that I'd like to take preemptive measure if possible.

This is what I intend to do, if when it happens to me.

This seems like the best thing to try right now. Like you said, it's early stages and anything is worth a shot.
(Yes, I found the link from looking at your Wiki link. But, at least it's better than no input at all.)
I also intend to research this some more myself. I haven't given it much thought until now, but I do quite like my hair.

The only fix I'm aware of is hair replacement surgery. But really, there's nothing wrong with the bald look. Just shave your head entirely if it comes down to it. Partially bald is not a look you can make work.

Counterpoint.

See this guy?

He's a monk with a tonsure. Don't we all know that monks can punch through brick walls with ease? The power flows from the hair, man.

Wrong kind of Monk. That kind of Monk can uh... live an ascetic lifestyle in order to bring himself closer to god. Yeah.

Truly depends. Many of the partially bald people I've seen looked like they had difficulties to accept they were going bald, so they tried to hide it, or work around it, and no matter what they did, it looked ugly. But a few of them just accepted it, kept their hair clean and short, and it was fine really. You just can't do much when you're partially bald that's all.

You know some awesome guys that are/were bald?

Patrick Stewart
Avery Brooks
Lawrence Fishburne
Ben Kingsley
Gandhi

You know who wasn't?   Hitler.
I'm just sayin.

The fact that I'm losing my hair faster faster than an Afghan hound in chemo has nothing to do with the aforementioned opinion. Honest.

I have it myself. I have coped by having the rest of my hair be very very long. but that won't last forever, I am starting to transition from metal hair to hippie hair. Maybe try rogain? I've been considering it, but it might be too late.

Sadly, the metal hair look I tried to maintain, utterly failed.
My hair simply isn't strong enough to support these lenghts.
