Odd embark
« on: March 20, 2011, 01:42:32 pm »

I've just decided to start a megaproject for to rival the Megadorf. I modded the worldgen to give me 100z levels of sky to work with but otherwise left it unchanged. I found a nice perfectly flat embark with a river and trees, but I also got a pair of 30+ diameter holes going all the way down to the magma sea. One of these holes neatly interrupts the river.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

I'm not exactly complaining about these, though the fps loss from the one with the river dumping into it will be annoying, and I see many ways to build them into my megaproject. Mostly I'm just wondering what the deal with these is, are random craters a feature of this latest version of DF?

Look like empty volcanoes.

Awesome. I think it's a bug, but above grounds pits like this should be intended behaviour if you ask me. Maybe not all the way to magma though.

Well if you remove the [MULTIPLE_LITTER_RARE] tag from dwarves I think they have like 2-4 children each time they give birth. And if you get enough mothers up on the pillars you can probably get a good waterfall going.

The depth is 13 on the river one and 15 on the other. Pretty shallow compared to what I'm going to be building I guess.

I think they were supposed to be magma pools, but something went wrong.

Kind of like the empty volcano bug.

Dig them deeper and make them into some form of sacrifice pit?

I've decided to use the pits as a handy way to bypass the aquifers. I've also noticed the river pit is not capping up and turning into a lake because the water lands in a shallow section of the magma sea and the obsidian instantly melts.

I am suddenly considering cracking the aquifer open and pouring it into one of the pits. I wonder if it could ever overcome the obsidian melt speed.

Would turning off cave-ins for a while fix that? Not that redirecting the river itself should be that hard either.

Is the obsidian melting or caving in to the semi-molten rock?'

'Cause it really shouldn't be melting.

I look at the bottom of the pit and see a water hitting magma but no obsidian. I am not getting cave in messages.

As far as river redirection goes: I don't think this biome freezes and the river is coming from the south so I have about 5 tiles from the map edge to redirect it. I was think about building a bridge for the river. many dwarves would probably die in this endavor.

I think the bottom layer of magma can't obsidianize.

Upload the save to DFFD?

That's sorta lame, I guess there's ways around this if I really wanted to make them. As cool as an everlasting drainless waterfall would be the fps loss would undermine the megaproject.
