Making a new fort in a default (medium everything) world in .31.21 called The Realms of Legend. I'm looking for people to choose dwarves they like and give them jobs, names, a history, and so forth. I'll then (yearly maybe?) report on how every dwarf is doing.

Any dwarf that doesn't get a person will be delegated to a grunt job: hauler, planter, and woodcutter.  Until I get dwarves claimed, my own dwarf will be doing all essential non-grunt work, and we won't mine anything (oh, the pain).

I've made the following changes to the d_init:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
I found a little place with a river, flux stone, and no aquifer. It's in The Swamp of Butchers, with a brook called Moltenvises. It's a warm freshwater swamp that's heavily forested with thick vegetation. It has clay, some soil, deep metals, and flux stone. I think we have a winner of a place.

I, as your first leader, name the first 7 The Trade Crowns, and the fort is named Toolchants (ok, they were both random).

None of us start off with any skills, and I have a nearly standard loadout (with 1 battle ax and pick, 2 war dogs and 2 cats, and some extra plump helmets with whatever is left.)

The currently available dwarves (and full descriptions) are:

sweet! do you have any job requests for him, to free him from normal grunt labor?

EDIT: people can claim multiple dwarves if they want, I don't really care. When I give general updates I'll post details only on the named dwarves specifically and "grunts" as a whole.

The first year is basically up, which signals the end of the beginning, and the update on what is happening.
-
Malimbar (me) has been quite content lately. He has slept in the dirt and grass, being caught in the rain as well. However, he's really admired the fine trade depot he designed and has been satisfied at work. He also been caught up in a romance with Deduk Earthhail. I'm debating maker her a named dwarf.

He is mostly being a carpenter and brewer to ensure a decent stockpile of wine. With this skill he also created a partially walled above-ground farm, irrigated with a standard screw pump made of wood.

He has taken up the position of broker since no one else has yet. Because we have no standard goods to sell, we instead sold some wine. We baught some lead and billon bars due to the complaints of no metal. We also purchased some meat.
-
Ahra has been ecstatic lately. during the last year he has become romantically involved with Astesh Glowingrings. He's slept in the grass and complained of the lack of chairs, but his new friends and romance more than made up for this.

He also became named and was assigned to weaponsmithing. He no longer has to worry about hauling crap or cleaning up vomit. Because of the lack of metal, he is mostly making charcoal right now. We have enough wood to last us a while. Then, when next years shipment of weapon-able metal arrives he can start his practice.

Becuase of his need for materials (particularly stone to make his workstations), a grunt was assigned as a miner. After 4 z levels we struck chalk, and thus both of the stations are made from chalk. Malimbar, in his meating with the outpost liason, also ordered some bronze, steel, silver and gold (since Ahra likes gold). He probably should have asked for copper as well, but that slipped his mind.
-
Most grunts were assigned to farming and plant gathering, and we gathered a !@#$ ton of plants. the first seven all became pretty decent herbalists, and the remaining grunts are more or less keeping busy between plant gathering and stockpiling (wood mostly). One was assigned as a miner as well, digging deep enough to uncover stone. Chalk is the stone of choice apparently here.

Since we have so many grunts and so few named dwarves, I decided to look at what sorts of things they'd like stockpiled.

Apparently they both like rabbits. Ahra likes bunnys for their ears, and Malimbar likes them for their ability to burrow. I'll have to keep an eye out for these when the elves come. I've also started building chessnut rooms for the both of us. I felt guilty making miners out of grunts, so Malimbar has taken that up as well. The grunts might screw it up of course. Since He's a better carpenter than miner though, he's sticking with the wood for now.

With permission, Ahra will become a miner soon. Without any ore to smelt and make into weapons, the only thing he's doing is making charcoal. A lot of charcoal.

I'll claim a dwarf. Astesh Glowingrings, who ought to spend most of her time working in animal husbandry (butchering, tanning, shearing, leatherworking and clothesmaking). She'll weave wool cloth and do masonry in a pinch, because she'd rather have furniture than not, and she knows she needs to have something to make the clothes with. She'll cook if she can cook with meat, but prefers to avoid plants and plant products. Too flimsy, you know? And it just doesn't feel right to be eating or wearing something that wasn't ever really alive.

The merchants have left in winter of 252, signaling a time for the new update.

Grunts:
A few grunts got married, and we have (counting) 3 babies running around now. Every now and then I send them off to gather wood and berries, so we're doing great for raw food and wood. I took off the miners since that felt like a non-grunt job.

Malimbar:
In the attempt to fill all needed and missing skills, Malimbar is getting a lot of random skills. he's a competent miner, skilled carpenter, competent brewer, and skilled appraiser. He also designs and builds all buildings, mechanisms, and operates the pumps for irregation. Most recently, has has finished the bedrooms for himself and Ahra, made out of solid chestnut wood. He's still romantically involved with the grunt Deduk Earthhail, though the romance has been faultering do to how busy he is. he has admired his fine door, fine bed, and the very good bedroom he slept in.

The recent shipment from the mountainhomes was slightly embarrassing, as there was so little to trade. We ended up selling a steel pick (do we really need that AND a copper pick?), along with some wine, meat, and leather armor. This was traded for some metal bars of bronze and silver (and one of steel, yay).

Ahra:
Ahra has been satisfied at his work recently, which mostly consists of burning wood. However, with the partial success of trading, we now have some weapon-ready materials to work with. The first bronze short sword was made, and silver maces are next. Ahra is still romantically involved with Astesh, and this is looking particularly good considering her new claim to existance (thank you Ghills). His room and the admirably designed trade depot were particularly pleasing to him.

Astesh: Congratulations on the new claim to life. Your relationship to Ahra now might actually mean something, as opposed to the fling you were before (sorry, grunts just aren't important). Astesh, you no longer have to haul or farm, and soon you will get your own chestnut wood room.

Unfortunately she is still working with plant fiber though. This is mostly due to the excess that the grunts are producing, the extreme need of bags, and the extremely limited supply of wool-producing animals. Now that we have a decent amount of bags, she will (as is her right), stop messing with that dirty plant stuff. Because of the excess of ugly animals (per malimbar's opinion), she was able to slaughter and tan a few animals. These were promptly made into leather armor.

BTW, do you want to give her a different name, or just stick with the nickname "Astesh"?

The end of 253 rolls around and it's time for another update.

Malimbar: When I freed the previously purchased rabbit to be a pet, Malimbar greedily took it in. Urist the rabbit has thus been faithfully following him ever since. He has otherwise been content, what with his bedroom, dining room, fine container, fine door, and comforting pet. Regardless, he also slept int he dirt, been caught in the rain, and been annoyed by flies. Other than keeping the wine supply stable, he has been building extensions to all the rooms (including containers), and is currently working on a training room (in case anyone eventually decides to go into the military).

Ahra: he's been ecstatic lately. This is in part due to his his great dining room, filled with reindeer tallow biscuts and cave fish stew. He's also admired his great bedroom and a fine furnace, which he has finally been able to use. All metal bars (copper, steel, bronze, and silver) provided in the latest shipment were made into war hammers and short swords. The previous batch was sold for this luxery, and they quality of his swords are starting to go up.

Astesh: She's been ecstatic as well. She has her own equal room, though using a llama wool bag instead of a mediocre wooden chest. Early in the year she abandoned the whole rope-reed weaving job. The stockpile of rope reed fiber has built up and been sold several times without processing. In exchange, she has her first sheep to care for (and sheer), as well as bins full of leather and wool. In her spare time she cooks, but only with meaty ingredients. The 3 named dwarves are now supplied by her cooking delicacies, like cave lobster stew and tallow biscuits, of course cooked in tallow. Because of her love of leggings, and her inabilty to make wool leggings, she's currently focused on the next best thing. Yarn trousers are coming out on a regular basis. No dwarf should have any excuse to be without anything on their lower body.

Grunts: They keep breeding, as the dwarven children count is up to 8. I think some got married too. The next census will update these statistics. They've also let a huge amount of food go to waist (as the blame shouldn't go on Malimbar, even if he isn't keeping up with the brewing). They're currently spending time organizing the excess of wood, since Malimbar keeps complaining when he wants only a specific type of wood.

Hurray! Astesh is ecstatic. She can keep her name. She hasn't really changed, after all, just gotten a new enthusiasm for life.

I'm sure she's thrilled to have a her own room and a sheep. Now the only thing she's really looking forward to is getting a mate for it, and perhaps a pair of breeding llamas if some can be found.

She might be jealous of the grunts, who seem to have lots of time for their families, but she's mostly very happy to have lots of productive work to do, full of all the things she loves most. Ahra's compliments on her cooking keep bringing thoughts of families to mind, but only when he's around. Otherwise she's simply enjoying life in her new bedroom and being able to store clothes in her llama wool bag.

Thank you for doing this! It's really quite a lot of fun from this end.

Tons of fun from my end too. The lack of certain specialties has caused a radical (for me) for design, and it's fun to work around the limitations.

I'm glad btw that we haven't had an ambush. I'm not sure if this is because of the lack of people, wealth, or just luck of the early game. If we do get an ambush, the strategy is basically to hide inside our rooms until they leave (and slaughter the grunts). Hmm... maybe I need rework this strategy to protect the animals...

the end of 254 is here! And to top it off, we have a new dwarf to track, Barma, who has taken up our new security detail (etc).
-
Overall (grunts and other things irrelevant to individuals): Several dwarven babies, all parented by grunts, were taken away. A few others were born. In the next census (in some later year probably), these will be updated. We also have a very large dog can cat population. They spawned from the first two war dogs, but are all as such untrained. We're leaving them around for security though, as they keep running into goblin thieves. Without a full time miner (and really, Malimbar is too busy to do this as well), the vast majority of our dwarves are exposed.

I did forget to mention that we have a waterfall on the map. We're not using it, but some dwarven grunts have been enjoying the scenery. It's been slow for them. We've stopped making rope reed thread, due to the excess we had before. We actually sold over 2k worth of thread alone - unwoven rope read thread. It clutter, so we stopped growing it.
-
Malimbar: Has been esctatic lately. The known contributors to this: satisfaction at work, eating a legendary meal (thanks astesh), acquiring Llama wool trousers (thanks astesh), admiring a few splendid things, and being comforted by his pet Buck rabbit Urist. He's been busy building another home and expanding them all to another floor. The new home is made of alder wood due to the shortage of chestnut. The alcohol is still always lacking, but we built a well for cases when we run too low. Winter doesn't freeze, so it's just sitting on a lake.
-
Ahra: has been lazy as the llama's recently. He burns through all the weapon's metal within a month, and then spends the rest of the year putzing around. We have plenty of charcoal, so he doesn't do that either. When the elves came, we bought a rabbit (which he promptly took), a few other butcherable animals, and a red squirrel. since he likes to eat those, and since there is no way to guarantee he actually gets teh meal, the squirrel is sitting in a cage in his bedroom. His new rabbit is named Catten.

At the end of the year, when the caravan brought metal for him to work with, he quickly produced several speers made of copper, bronze, bismuth bronze, and steel. He also made a couple of war hammers of silver. Many of these were sold, a few were kept around for the next caravan after this one left, and the well-crafted steel speer is now being used by our singular militia lady Barma.
-
Astesh: She's mostly been keeping busy with cooking and butchering meat. After the caravans she now has 5 llamas, 1 ram, and apparently only 1 alpaca. Alpaca's are more expensive than llamas. There are also a half-dozen rabbits, but those will likely turn into pets and food. Can we turn rabbit fur into yarn? we'll find out.

The clothing business has been lacking in light of the food and leather business, but that is picking up more now. She still hasn't made all of the previous year's wool into trousers and shirts, so that comes first. The butchering business has been quite active due to our new hunter/warrior. We've had a wide variety of meat because of this.
-
Barma: The newest dwarf have been extremely active, and has been quite contently recently. she enjoyed a bath, made a satisfying acquisition (or several), has been attacked (thought I'm not sure by what), and has complained about how slowly she's getting her new dining room.

She used a home-made (and crudely made) alder crossbow to hunt. A grunt that happend by a strange mood produces all of her wooden bolts, almost entirely of excellent quality. The bolts are held in a artifact reindeer leather quiver called "Brutalvipers the Blind Seal", which is encircled (and presumably reinforced) with bands of reindeer leather. So far she has killed: 3 capybaras, 4 mountain goats, 1 yak, 2 turkey hens, 2 ducks, and 2 capybaras (SIC). She has also recently started training in a danger room of ashen spear traps.

While she's just started using a speer (made by Ahra), she is very skilled at fighting. How skilled? glad you asked: Dabbling hammerdwarf (from the crossbow), novice speardwarf, master marksdwarf, master archer, legendary shield user, adequate armor user, legendary fighter, dabbling wrestler, and competent dodger. She's the resident bad-ass. Her military is named the Creations of Roughness.
-

Note: goblins and kobolds have started becoming a nuisance, and most of our dwarves are still sleeping in the dirt on a regular basis. Since our only "fortification" is Barma, it'll be interesting to see what the next year or two will result in.
