Pride, Power, and Planes: input driven story (attempt two)
« on: March 20, 2011, 09:24:04 am »

((Alright, my last attempt at this got interrupted by real lifey stuff, so I'm going to try this again. This is a writing experiment where I attempt to improve my abilities while crafting some more life into my setting. While providing an interesting enough sight for the forums to read. Any type of suggestion is allowed, from a request for a character, an action for the protagonist, or anything at all. It's at least a semi-serious story though, and I reserve the right to ignore or delay (preferably the second) suggestions that wouldn't work well at the moment.

Thus far, I'm working with two suggestions from attempt one,

The viewpoint character should be a hero, motivated by a desire for power over others. (For their own good, of course.)
His main failing should be his pride.
He should rely on his Speed and Agility in fights.

Which is giving us the core of the character and

... unspeakable horrors lurk ...

Which'll be worked in in time.

For now, I've already started the first section (and am carefully repressing my last attempt at it). There's still room for suggestions for it, especially because it's going to take me a bit of time to get it from my laptop to an internet connection.))

The timeperiod should be steampunk modern with some magic thrown in for good measure.

The time period should be steampunk rennisance with magic, steampunk modern is overdone, think fable 3.

No, it should be steampunk WWII with magic and magical creatures thrown in. Along with aliens and (at the very end) the threat of volient colozation ( Like battlefield: L.A.).

Setting: Renaissance with various modern themes, and perhaps religious ideals.

The setting should be similar to all of the above, but more specific and unique, specifically:

Aestetic design and architecture are highly detailed, elegant but with right angles, stout and powerful. Think in the direction of ancient Rome or grece.

Culture is mostly victorian, but with some considerably progressive traits; most notably having an attitude towards information similar to the most radical proponents for things like open source, torrenting, wikileaks, etc. IRL with no concept of intellectual property, and having a political system of http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Futarchy

Warfare is at the tech level of late WWI, with a few exceptions.

technology is based mostly of hydraulics and optics. So high tech looks like lots of shiny mirrors and crystals bending light and tends to leak thick transparent fluid when damaged.

information tech is at the level of 1970ies or so.

other tech is at the functional level of 1990ies unless specified otherwise, but this is due to magic. Theoretical understanding and tech that does not have access to magic is at early industrial levels.

Magic exits, but can not be used unaided by humans. It shows up in the form of magical creatures, as an element of technology, and in certain gadgets can be "built" from only magic "matter" and thus thrown unaided. The last ones have a short lifespan and need huge bulky machines to make, and are extremely expensive. Magic also requires rare and dangerous minerals to produce and in general resemble electricity a lot economically and infrastructure wise.

Because FTL travel, antigravity, and hyperaxelerating algae tanks in the absence of light are easy given large amounts of magic, large flying ships are common, and interstellar space travel is equivalent in difficulty to making a nuclear submarine (wich is possible with 1990s tech, thus they can do it).

Edit: someone mentioned religion.

The most widespread religion actually worships evolution. A bit like New Age, but darker, they tend to constantly revise their beliefs incorporating the latest scientific findings, except it's not actually the findings but horribly twisted misunderstandings of them. They are called the Children of Ution, and their deity ution is described as an incomprehensible schisophernic not-mind splized into the very fabric of logic, with immense creative power that shaped all life and society from raw dead nothingness, schizophrenic creating different parts of the world to oppose each other with no plans or overall goals, indifferent and cruel beyond human comprehension caring for nothing but that you maximize your inclusive genetic fitness, with in some places is actually a strikingly accurate description of evolution. But then they do stuff that makes no sense like trying to pray to it and trying to cull the "inferior" despite that actually decreasing their own personal fitness

In the past, Strife had various armed angels that were literally the angels you know of, just with assault rifles. They were really well thought out characters.

Yeah, it's in that same setting. One of the key points of my normal setting is that there are a bunch of different planes, each one with it's own rules. Most of the time, I tended to focus on the rare types who meddled with the different planes, a fair number of whom claim to be gods.

The Angels are probably the strongest faction that does stuff between planes, and they are completely frank about being Abramiac angels worshiping the Lord of Hosts. Mostly, they're pretty nice guys, although actually getting an Angelic army to come by is a pretty difficult thing to do.

Of course, it's perfectly reasonable that God is just an especially strong planewalker who makes an effort of trying to organize miracles to gain believers.

It sounds really cool and I'm crafting the best way for that sort of world to fit into the larger setting. Right now, it might become the base of power for the faction that I was trending towards the POV being involved with. Possibly, depending on suggestions as they come in.

How cliche'd.

Hey, in addition to Strife if he gets in here, shouldn't there be a follow up to someone like that? Like a Token Good character to oppose him?

Well, I always tried to consider Strife Chaotic Good, with him trying to do the right thing, but valuing his freedom a helluva lot. The Angel Ralph was roughly Lawful Good. Then I had Marko, the pyromanical fallen angel who was chaotic evil. There was also Trap, roughly Neutral good or true neutral. Grey would be chaotic neutral as well, possibly evil, I'm not sure. I also had Richie, whom I don't think I've ever written about, who was roughly Chaotic good, I think, although he'd almost always be an antagonist. And Connor, who was Lawful good as well, if somewhat chaoticer than his faction prefers.

I was kind of thinking on lawful for this hero, especially with the goal of power over others.
